Last week’s challenge: “The Cocktail Is Your Title“
This week, again we will take 20 subgenres. You will pick two from the list either using a d20 or random number generator (or hell, divine it from the guts of a pigeon, whatever), then you will write a short story that mashes up those two subgenres.
This time, you’ll get 2000 words.
Because I’m sweet like that.
This is due by next Friday, noon EST.
Post at your online space.
Link to it in the comments below.
The subgenre list:
- Haunted House

- Cozy Mystery
- Military Sci-Fi

- Conspiracy Thriller

Managed to get in under the posted word limit for a change, here’s a “Parallel Universe / Revenge” story titled “Against Me” coming in at around 1,500 words:

Wow…great story! Loved the ending!
[…] I plan to try my hand at short stories. And the first might be based on an idea I got from Chuck Wendig’s challenge from last week, which I started to write, and then realized I might be able to do something more with. Mixing and […]

Rolled a 20 and a 3, which is Shapeshifters & Revenge. It seemed easy until my story went off in a completely different direction (which I really enjoyed). If you’re getting revenge against something evil, you get a happy ending?

Awesome story – the revenge element is subtle, but there. Well done!

Military Sci-Fi and Comic Fantasy. I confess that Comic Fantasy was a re-roll – I got Wuxia the first time but as I had to look up what it was, I thought my chances of being able to do it justice weren’t good.

Comedic Fantasy meets Caper. I used a group of characters from a previous challenge because they fit too well with the idea.

I hope it’s not too late (20 minutes – so sorry!!!) – here’s my submission on noir / body horrific. It’s called ‘Lovely Velma’ http://kateloveton.wordpress.com/2014/06/27/lovely-velma/
I rolled “Dystopia” and “Erotica”, and came up with “Feeling Human”: http://nickegelhoff.com/2014/06/27/flash-fiction-challenge-doing-the-subgenre-twist-once-again/

I chose Grimdark Fantasy and Body Horror and started writing. But by the time I had the story plotted out I realized this was going to be a sub-plot in my novel. It turned a throwaway character into a minor character. Thanks for the righting prompt.
