Flash Fiction Challenge: Somethingpunk

Last week’s challenge: “Four Random Items.”

I wrote this book. It’s out now, and for a subgenre, I sometimes laughingly call it “cornpunk.”

This week, I’m over at Scalzi’s Whatever talking about the Big Idea behind the book, screaming a bit about corn and GMOs and Monsanto and marriage equality and raising a child and — well, hell, just go read it. Point is, I talk a little about the origins of “cornpunk.”

And now, this week’s challenge, I want you to come up with your own something-punk.

Preferably something that hasn’t been done before (cyber- steam- diesel- bug- etc.).

You’ve got 1000 words.

Due in one week’s time: August 9th, noon EST.

I’ll pick three random participants to get signed copies of Under the Empyrean Sky (if you’re in the US; I can send internationally if you want to pony up the shipping).

Go forth and write, ‘punkers.

  1. The term “SCUBApunk” embedded itself in my brain and then festered and got infected. The gist of the story actually came to me in a dream last night when the dog woke me up at 3:00 AM to be let out. So I guess I should be grateful to the dog.

Here’s “The Next Big Thing”. http://wp.me/p3tdUw-eP

As always, comments and constructive criticism are most appreciated.

  2. Um, so this wasn’t really what I had originally planned to write. In fact, I don’t really know where this came from except perhaps from a combination of watching too much History Channel, reading too many books about monsters, and consuming too much sugar before I go to bed. High fructose corn syrup and vampires . . . bad combo.

I’m going to call this story, which is entitled “Essential Features,” Secret Society Punk. Any feedback would be appreciated.

And I ain’t too proud to beg: I really want that signed copy of Under the Empyrean Sky!!! *fingers crossed*

    • I hope you get UtES too! I picked it up right after I uploaded coffee punk. I’m glad I did it after, because I would’ve stolen from UtES for coffee punk. Yours s great too. Keep up the writing!
