Last week’s challenge: “Twisted Love“
This week’s challenge is simple enough.
Take a random song (use iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, etc. to accomplish this).
That random song’s title is now the title of your short flash fiction.
Now: write that flash fiction. Once again: 1000 words. Any genre will do. Post it at your online space, link back here in the comments. Due by next Friday, February 28th, noon EST.
That’s it. Whaddya waiting for?

Random hit turns up “Dirty old egg sucking dog”. OMG I think I’m gonna have to sleep on this one, but I can’t wait to write it!

Rebecca Martin says:
My song has been chosen and my mind is racing with several possible story directions.
Sleeping may turn out to be overrated after all.

Mozette says:
Thanks! I’ve seen them hypnotise people – about 4 people – from an audience, and wondered what would happen if they whammied the whole place somehow… 🙂
And with this very catchy, very ear-worm-like song, it was easily done. 😀

Shane Vaughan says:
Right-oh, an interesting one this. I got the song “Undertow” by AES Dana, a really ambient post-rock instrumental.
As such, my short this week is very aesthetic, a lot of floury language and interesting descriptions about a guy on a beach with a gun.
Enjoy.

Nick Nafpliotis (@NickNafster79) says:

This one will be another odd one. The last song played was “The Wrong Side of Heaven” by Five Fingered Death Punch. Here it is at 1001 words:

February 21, 2014 — 1:27 PM
Kevin Veldman says:
I liked the story, although I am not sure about the very end. Maybe it’s because I’ve never heard the song, but I’m not quite sure I understood the sentence that closed the story. Other than that though, I loved the existential feel of the interactions. I’t hard to pull that in dialogue. Well done!
February 21, 2014 — 3:34 PM
Hannah says:
Interesting piece–I’m not familiar with the song, but I like that you interwove the lyrics into the piece! Nicely done.
February 27, 2014 — 2:48 PM

andreaspeed says:
I hit shuffle on my iPod, and it came up with Kill It In The Morning, a song by the Scottish rock group The Twilight Sad. I turned that into a brief, bitter story of post-apocalyptic revenge. Sort of fits the song too. http://andreaspeed.com/2014/flash-fic-challenge-kill-it-in-the-morning/

“It happens all the time. People are left all the time. It means nothing. He’ll manage.
The sun drags itself up over the mountains, slow, turning the grass red with the first rays of light. He can feel their absence in the air. He can feel where they stood, all 100 of them before they left him.”

I got View From Heaven by Yellowcard as my random song. This story took a darker turn from what I usually write, but it was a great (and slightly emotional) challenge for me.

February 23, 2014 — 3:55 PM
Nick Nafpliotis (@NickNafster79) says:
Very good stuff, AJ…although it made me pretty sad by the end. At least the emotion was due to a powerful story and not disappointment, though!

February 23, 2014 — 2:36 PM

The more I think about it, the more I think it’s the combination of breezy patter and the sudden bang at the end that does it for me.

Mr. Random told me to use Black Flag’s Modern Man as my title. I wanted to go deep on this one, get all philosophical, but wound up with a shaggy dog story about predictable math problems and simulated monkeys in the dystopian near-future.
