I’d like to note that last week’s post garnered 500+ entries.
Holy poopsnacks.
(Though I’ll also note that some of you went well and above contributing an entry, which is against the spirit of the thing if not against the law. Also a number of folks broke the proscriptions — a lot, in fact, mentioned death despite the restriction. Tsk tsk tsk.)
Getting ten sentences out of 500 is tricky, but I’m gonna try it.
The challenge is simple:
Pick one of the opening sentences below (or choose one randomly), then write. The story that results should be between 1000-2000 words. Post it at your online space and link back here. Due by next Friday, March 4th, noon EST. Note the sentence you choose forms the first sentence of the story.
1. “Of all the things I expected to find in my tomato soup, this wasn’t one of them.” (Stella Wood)
2. “The clock strikes 12:17 and all I can think is I should have called tails.” (HB McCarthy)
3. “The emerald ring was pretty enough, but the man offering it wasn’t.” (kirajessup)
4. “Getting into the program was the easy part; it was getting out that would take every skill she possessed.” (Diedra Black)
5. “Eyes shut against the darkness, counting back from ten, I hope to god it’s gone when I open them again.” (Jonny B)
6. “The first breath shattered her world, the second shattered her heart.” (Fred Yost)
7. “Every building has a secret entrance, one even the architects somehow overlooked.” (LP)
8. “It was Hadeon’s lie that saved the world.” (Berti Walker)
9. “The bald man grinned and capered madly in the alley.” (Sam Brady)
10. “A year ago, this would have been an unthinkable act.” (Sarah Brentyn)

I loved this! I swear, I’m such a foodie. My brain went way more, like, sci-fi/humor with that sentence, but I am SO in love with yours. And the artist commentary at the end… mmhmm!
March 1, 2016 — 4:56 PM
Mariah Avix says:
Thanks! I really thought it was just going to be a food love piece and then it kind of went somewhere unexpected. Which is impressive in such a small space, but it was fun.

I went with #6 in the end, although the choices were difficult. This one latched on and didn’t let go and a fantasy sprung to mind. I had to cull a lot of words to keep it within the range of the challenge, because my mind ran away with the story. I’d like to expand on it in the future.
Here is my story – The fledgling http://kira.jessup.co/?p=479
March 1, 2016 — 10:42 PM
Mel says:
Love it! I can definitely see why you want to expand on it. Considering I just had a baby myself not long ago, the wording and emotions within really resonated with me. Well done!

I did a little happy dance at my desk (in my office, at the day job) when I saw it was one of the ten. (congrats to you on that too!) I’ve been too focused on the WiP to participate in the regular flash fiction challenges, but since last week was only one sentence I figured I could give it a go and I’m really excited to see what people have created / will create.
March 2, 2016 — 11:36 PM
dcxli says:
This definitely reads like the opening chapter to a fantasy epic. I would have liked to see the uncut version to see how much more of this world you have to show. One small critique is that some of the dialogue seems to be purely exposition. This is hard to avoid in short formats like this, but it pulled me out of the story for a minute when Fabian’s titles and attributes were listed in conversation. Apart from that one thing, though, I loved it.
March 2, 2016 — 10:33 PM
laurahcarter says:
I have no words, honestly! I loved every minute of it!
March 3, 2016 — 2:44 AM
Berti Walker says:
One thing- “Greta wiped at the terms rolling down her cheeks.”
You got some good inspiration from this prompt. Run with it! This has the makings of a novel, for sure.

kirajessup says:
ooh, thanks, I will fix it up.
March 3, 2016 — 2:08 PM

AWESOME idea. 😀
March 3, 2016 — 3:15 PM
denmaniacs4 says:
It’s yours to run with. The Donald, no matter his presidential nomination fate, is a constant source of stimulation to me as a writer…and a simple human being compelled to watch the world in which we live.
March 5, 2016 — 1:01 PM
Sam Brady says:
Have you seen the movie “Dave”? This sort of put me in mind of that, but in a much darker way. Not sure if it was meant to be creepy or not, but it sort of was. Good stuff. You took my sentence in an unexpected direction. Glad you liked it.
March 3, 2016 — 5:35 PM
denmaniacs4 says:
I saw “Dave” years ago. The idea of having doppelgangers is not new. One of my favorite war films is The Man Who Never Was. Filmed in 1956, it centered on the attempt to fool the Nazis about where D-Day would happen by planting a body in the sea with false information. Anyway, that was the flicker of light for me with this story, that and the bald guy. I know Donald has his own hair but still…don’t we all wonder just a bit? Thanks for the sentence…
March 5, 2016 — 12:59 PM
dcxli says:
I chose #3 because I loved the imagery.
Here is “Rings”
https://dcxli.wordpress.com/2016/03/01/rings/
March 2, 2016 — 1:01 AM
Mozette says:
Completely different to where I took it… both our rings were magic… but in different ways. 😀
March 3, 2016 — 6:46 AM

Yes, and I liked your take of having it be a curse instead of a boon.
March 3, 2016 — 9:40 AM

Thanks for the prompt!
March 3, 2016 — 7:14 AM
dcxli says:
This was fantastic. I love seeing how different people can take the same prompt in such different directions. I went the magical route as well, but they still were so different. I liked how this was so character driven; Isabel is very interesting, if somewhat despicable.
March 2, 2016 — 10:05 PM
john freeter says:
Somewhat relatable… despite all that nose wrinkling.
March 2, 2016 — 11:49 PM

Bahaha! Cute way to point out the repetition 😉 I’ve corrected it; thank you.

Hehe, sorry. I had to point it out, because I really liked your story
March 3, 2016 — 7:40 PM

Loved the idea you went for with the emerald ring! Isabel’s character was enjoyable to read and I loved the ending 🙂
March 3, 2016 — 5:11 AM
Catastrophe Jones says:
Nice twist. I love how even though a lot of people chose the rings as a prompt, all those stories are drastically different! I loved your idea, and it was fun to read 😀
You were hoping for a title… I think you could call the story something like ‘The Beauty of Isabel’ maybe?
March 3, 2016 — 3:23 PM
Berti Walker says:
Thank you for the suggestion <3
March 3, 2016 — 5:23 PM

Here’s mine. In the true spirit of flash, I wrote it all in one go, so it may be in need of some polish. Thanks to Sam Brady for opening sentence #9: http://makesmesodigress.com/2016/03/03/dancin-in-the-street/
March 3, 2016 — 2:53 PM

boundbeautifunk says:
I loved kirajessup’s sentence, which reminded me of a non-POV character in a story I’m currently working on. I used the sentence to flesh-out some things that happen “off camera.” I hope it works well as an independent story, too.
Thanks for the opportunity!

I have no idea what the etiquette around here is for submitting a second story. I suppose whether this post makes it out of moderation or not will tell me. I wanted to post this one too, though.
Sentence #9 was my submission. This is where it came from. I wrote story this a couple of years ago, using that sentence as the opener. It was for NaNoWriMo 2014 and this was the opening (and, as it turns out, only) chapter of my NaNovel that year. It is high fantasy set in a near-future cyberpunk world. Please to enjoy. You know, if it’s okay to post two stories and this post makes it out of moderation.

This is hilarious. Pick it back up. Dust it off. Run with it, would you? It reminds me of Shadowrun and damned if it wasn’t wicked fun to read.

Yeah, not the first time I’ve into that problem with flash. Glad you enjoyed it!

Fred G. Yost says:
No need to apologize, Matthew, that was excellent. I have a soft spot for spy thrillers and badass females, so yeah, this rocked. As with all of these, I’m glad y’all were able to take my one straw sentence and spin awesome word gold out of it.

The beginning sentence I chose, “Every building has a secret entrance, one even the architects somehow overlooked.” (LP) Thanks LP.

Aaaah! You can’t stop there! You just CAN’T!
…nicely done — you have some weird tense issues back and forth between past and present, but even that doesn’t jar it up that much — I read it and read it again, even faster, wanting to somehow find the secret myself, as though I could find the place where this keeps going!

Didn’t expect to see mine in there. Bit late to the party, but having a go at No.2 with some frantic flash.

I have been using these sentences in my ENG 201 (Advanced Composition) classes as prompts for ungraded five minute freewrites I use as attendance; I have some confused students but I have gotten some great stories.

Am I the only one here who wants to see what they’ve written? Did you use the whole 500+ list, or just the 10 Chuck picked?

I went with #6 and started to tie in a character-centric novella I plan to work on in the future. It’s flash, it’s fiction, and it probably needs some work.

Thank you ^^ I have a lot of material to work with, but sometimes pulling from other storylines is easier said than done.

Fred G. Yost says:
Nicely done! Going in with no knowledge of your other work, it was the perfect combination of surprising and intriguing. You messed with my expectations and left me wanting to explore the rest of this world.
