Or a treehouse, or a cabin, or Neil Gaiman’s Magic Writing Gazebo.
Asked about this on The Social Medias yesterday, but now I’m asking you.
Anybody done this? Have an outdoor office? Some companies sell pre-fab buildings for just this purpose. Another option is to buy a shed and retrofit it to serve as an office — obviously I’d need electricity and some kind of HVAC and a rancor pit. Plus gladiator quarters.
So. Hit me with your best shot.

My husband and I used a pre-fab shed, finished it out, built a porch, added a bunch of other stuff, then lived in it for five years (we like to take things too far, sometimes). Currently, we live in an apartment and god-bless-air-conditioning, but we still go out there (“out there” is the property its on) some weekends to write and play music. It’s pretty sweet. http://pasturerd.tumblr.com/post/41729608183/and-because-i-havent-posted-photos-recently-here <– photo inside. http://pasturerd.tumblr.com/post/37536014054/the-side-of-the-cabin-and-porch-the-big-box-is <— photo outside.

I have a shed in the backyard that I use. It has a heater, an AC window unit, my computer, and internet. Sometimes I even work without pants!

I’d love to have an office shed. Or just a small house to live in. When I was a kid up north, in a mining town with ‘flexible’ zoning, many homes had a one bedroom house in the back. They used to rent them out to the single miners, or a couple just starting out. The mines faded, but new community college, serving a huge area, meant lots of students looking for a cheap place.
Too bad we can’t build the same here in large cities, as opposed to stacks of concrete hovels.

My creative space was in a 2-story building across the driveway from our house, the best description I can give is that it resembles those cottage-like storage buildings sold at Home Depot or Lowes for a few thousand dollars. I checked on setting up one of those pre-fabs at our new house and it could be done in our area for about 12K including slab, water lines and electric wiring- a bit too much for now, so I make the 2-mile drive to the old house and work there.

I lust all the tiny houses. I lust HARD. As a weak second, my dog is digging a hole large enough to fit a writer’s body. I priced some Tuff Sheds in my area, but I may as well sell body parts to get one in my backyard. I figure if I’m going to put one back there I’m going to get a good one. At 5K and up, I’m priced out. But hey! Who needs two kidneys anyway?

Now I want to convert the shed we already have into an office or game room for the man – I would never have to hear all that crazy cursing and swearing demon possession that takes place when he games.

The HOA won’t let me put it in my backyard, but a vintage trailer would make the perfect writing space.

My Brother-In-Law has an RV Repair Business, He already had a shed for equipment and then he added on a new shed for his office. Both in the far backyard of their home. Both with Electric, A/C & Heat. He likes being out there in his backyard office and my sister likes him being out there too; her only regret, he eventually comes in the house to sleep or eat.

Sheds are very useful, however, using one as an office is something I haven’t heard of before. sounds like a good idea.
