You want to promote something story-based? A book? A comic? A movie? A game? Here’s where you do it. Drop into the comments below, and give a (preferably short) head’s up to the Awesome Work you did. Hey, include links, too, so we can check out whatever it is you want us to see.
But —
But.
Here’s the caveat.
You must also promote one other thing that is not by you.
That’s your ticket through the door.
Promote someone else.
Promote yourself in return.
Fail that, and I’ll delete your comment. Or worse, kick it into the SPAM OUBLIETTE.

I am happy to say I finally wrote the book of my heart, as they say. It’s called Lillian Holmes and the Leaping Man, a soup of Holmes, history, romance, and a bit of vampire-slayer thrown in. A broken heiress in 1899 fantasizes she is the niece of Sherlock Holmes.

Very cool idea! I’d like to recommend Saving Alexander by Susan Mac Nicol.
Punishing himself for a horrific past that is not his fault, bestselling author Alexander Montgomery seeks redemption and love—and perhaps he will find it.
Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet your mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.
Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s latest best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him. http://www.amazon.com/Saving-Alexander-Susan-Mac-Nicol-ebook/dp/B00G9QP6DU/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1384782875&sr=1-1&keywords=Saving+Alexander

So, naturally I want to promote myself, because I’ve had two books released this year: BRAINEATER JONES, a fun noir romp about a zombie detective and THE GHOUL ARCHIPELAGO, my magnum opus of undead swashbuckling. But while I’m here, I wanted to point out two of my favorite reads this year: ORACLE OF PHILADELPHIA by Elizabeth Corrigan, which is an urban fantasy about angels and features the greatest demon character OF ALL TIME and ARTIFICIAL ABSOLUTES by Mary Fan, a trippy, Phillip K. Dick-esque sci-fi space adventure/mind-bender. That’s enough spec-fic to choke a mule! (Note: the author of this comment does not support the choking of mules with speculative fiction novels.)

Hi, my name is Paul Weimer and I have a story in an anthology!
The anthology is TALES OF EVE, edited by Mhairi Simpson.
“Weird Science, Stepford Wives, that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer… Genre fiction abounds with tales of men creating (or attempting to create) the perfect woman.
Now it’s the woman’s turn. But being female, she’s flexible. She doesn’t just want to create the perfect man. She wants the perfect companion, be it man, beast or washing machine.”
It includes stories by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Jukiet McKenna, and well, me (my story, “Newton’s Method”, is the story that opens the anthology)

I’ll see if I can hold on for 9 seconds in this rodeo.
First, let me tell you all about the awesomeness that is Jocelyn Koehler *ttp://www.amazon.com/Jocelyn-Koehler/e/B007VCB6Z8/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1384784241&sr=8-1 and how deftly she can weave a fairy tale that holds your interest, and impresses you with language.
To follow that up, and in a totally unrelated vein and medium, if you’ve got ANY interest in James Bond, I think you might really enjoy the James Bonding podcast. http://www.nerdist.com/podcast/james-bonding/
One more, that isn’t me: Ella Ceron has been consistently putting together a portfolio with a strong, 20-something female voice with more edge, wit and poise than any 24-year-old vegan gymrat coffee-loving runner should. She’s a got an INCREDIBLY intense personal book out in the very near future, so keep an eye on her: http://thoughtcatalog.com/ella-ceron/
Now, to me. I’m still churning out writing, editorial advice, and game design on the regular over at http://writernextdoor.com and I’m still always on the hunt for opportunities to edit awesome things, or at least help spare things the indignity of too many rejections.
I’m still knocking together a few longer books on writing, but you can catch up on my earlier stuff (on the cheap!) https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/thewriternextdoor
But the big announcement is that I’m neck deep in my own game, The Great Game, role-playing the awesomeness of Sherlock Holmes, Dashiell Hammett, Rex Stout and Agatha Christie style mysteries and whodunits.

–Once upon a time if you told doctors you heard voices, they’d diagnose you as schizophrenic, put you on heavy drugs, and lock you away in a cozy state institution to keep you from hurting yourself or others.

Paul O'Brien says:
Hello, mine is slightly different book in that it’s a crime novel – set in the pro-wrestling world of the 1970’s.
It’s called BLOOD RED TURNS DOLLAR GREEN.
WWE Legends Mick Foley and William Regal have taken the unprecedented step in officially endorsed it. So has NY Times Bestselling author of Artemis Fowl, Eoin Colfer.
This is this novel is FREE!! on my site right now. I know the word wrestling can put some people off but because the novel is FREE!! then I hope you see it as a no risk click.
I’ll finish with the back of the book:
1972 New York City and a dazed LENNY LONG walks away from a crash carrying someone’s foot in his hand. He is also searching for the VIP passenger who has somehow disappeared from the back of his overturned van. It’s the first day of his new promotion and LENNY has less than twenty minutes to deliver the missing person or a lot of people are going to get badly hurt.
DANNO GARLAND is in Shea Stadium trying to avoid a riot. He’s coming to the end of the most successful wrestling card of all time but he’s also coming to the realisation that he might not be able to deliver his widely hyped main event. He knows there’s more than the eyes of the arena on him and if LENNY doesn’t arrive soon, blood is going to be sought. Probably his.
PROCTOR KING nervously watches the show on TV, wondering why his fuck-up of a son does not already have the world heavyweight championship belt in his grasp. Arranging this match has taken PROCTOR four years of pay-offs, double dealing and bone-breaking to arrange, and if all that effort has been wasted then he might just have to take him a business trip to New York.
LENNY, DANNO and PROCTOR. Three men with pieces of the puzzle – but none with the full picture.
When they do piece it all together, the ‘fake’ world of professional wrestling is going to get very real.
———
Thank you and I hope you take a risk on something a little different in the crime genre.

What a great idea! I’ll be adding a ton of these to my to-read list.
I recently worked on an anthology called The Midnight Carnival: One Night Only. Thirteen short stories explore a single Halloween night in a carnival where nothing is what it appears. This has it all: a touch of horror, humor, character exploration, and even lovely illustrations by bbshrimp. Readers of modern supernatural and fantasy works should enjoy this fun little read.
As for my own reading, I can’t say enough about Rat Queens and Pretty Deadly. Do you like bad ass leading ladies? Do you enjoy gorgeous art and phenomenal writing? Then do yourself a favor and get on these bandwagons before they get too crowded. RQ is tongue-in-cheek fantasy with an amazing cast (an atheist cleric! a backstabbing hippie!) and PD is a fresh take on all the spaghetti westerns you grew up enjoying. Also, Ginny is the daughter of Death. Need I say more?

For myself, I just released my third novel, The Lost Book of Anggird. Stuffy Professor Roric Rossony’s world is rocked by his sexy new assistant, Perarre Tabrano. It’s rocked even more when, in search of information about the origins of magic, he digs too deeply into lost and forbidden books and finds the last thing he expected! *shuffles feet, clears throat* Hi, my name is Ashlee, and my debut novel came out this week. 😀
The Damning Moths is the first of a dark fantasy trilogy following the desperate attempt to resurrect an elder god to prevent another destructive magus war from breaking out between faekinds, and all the glorious problems which get in the way. High Priestesses, assassins, undead, lots of magic and faeries! Old grudges, secrets, and loyalty from unexpected quarters! The paperback has sixteen incredible illustrations! And frankly, I’ve just finished eating dinner which has left me feeling all lethargic and satisfied, so this is harder than it should be. XD Samples of the novel and illustrations are on the website, as well as the free short story, And Pain Will Follow, all which will hopefully be more illuminating than my food-befuddled ramblings: http://www.thedamningmoths.com/
(Novel and ebook available on Amazon, hoorah: http://www.amazon.com/The-Damning-Moths-Ashlee-Scheuerman/dp/0987348906/ )
As for promotion of other works, I can do that with gusto, because there’s one book I always want to tell people about. I absolutely must recommend the brilliant anthology, Chiral Mad. Some of the best psychological horror I have ever had the pleasure of reading. One particularly excellent piece has me sobbing every time I re-read this collection, which is an absolute compliment of the highest order – I do love tragedies, yes indeedy. The pacing of the book kept me going from one story to the next, ready for more, devouring the words as they were presented. All twisted together around the theme of chirality with each individual work holding the personal flair of the author, where some stories play through mystic experiences, while others delve deep into the instability of the human mind. You can grab a copy over on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Chiral-Mad-Michael-Bailey/dp/1479152439/
HOWEVER. Not only is it one of my favourite anthologies to date, but Chiral Mad 2 is coming out soon with an awe-inspiring line up of authors which promises to be just as good, if not better, than the original collection. I am so ready to read the next anthology in what I hope becomes an on-going series. (The editor has considered putting together a third volume! YES!) News about CM2 can be found at: http://blog.nettirw.com/
Enjoy the sharing of good stories, you wonderful people.

First, I want to offer up a lady who is a fantastic writer, Shira Anthony who writes amazing books about musicians. Her Amazon page can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Shira-Anthony/e/B00F1EQNZ6 I love, love love them and she’s started a new series, about mermen which is just delicious! She is *definitely* worth a read.
For me, I am Grace R. Duncan and have two books in my first series out now, called Golden Collar. My amazon author page is here: http://www.amazon.com/Grace-R-Duncan/e/B00BCMBWY8 But I do also have a free read on my publisher’s page, which can be found here: http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/index.php?cPath=976
The Golden Collar series is a rich world set in a fictitious version of the medieval middle east. There’s erotic romance, intrigue, action and plenty of emotion. The covers are done by the amazing Paul Richmond (http://www.paulrichmondstudio.com/) and have amazingly captured the beautiful men in the books. I do hope you take a look and enjoy them!

HELL’S SUPER, my satire, or comic fantasy if you prefer, was published in October to very good reviews. (On reviewer said “one of the funniest books I’ve read by any author in any genre.) HELL’S SUPER is about Steve, a man whose eternal damnation is to serve as Hell’s Super(intendent) of Plant Maintenance, or Mr. Fixit. His is assistant is Orson Welles (yes, that Orson Welles.) The book is full of famous historical characters, devils and demons of course, and magical creatures, all of whom are slightly cracked.
HELL’S SUPER is a genre mashup: comedy, mystery, and love story. Since it is the first in a series, it’s been priced to sell at 99 cents/77 pence. Check it out at: http://www.amzn.com/B00FNFZ8LS or at http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FNFZ8LS .
I’d also like to recommend Claire C. Riley’s LIMERENCE. This book is no TWILIGHT. LIMERENCE is an adult’s vampire novel. One of the elements of the vampire genre that particularly appeals to me is the sexuality of the creature. Riley explores the sensual element of the myth. She’s also REALLY good at writing sexual scenes. Limerence is so searingly sexy that I really got into the story. Her book can be found at http://www.amazon.com/Limerence-Claire-C-Riley/dp/1482727668/ref=cm_sw_em_r_dp1_1ZIIsb0FDC2QF_tt.

Not me: I absolutely love this book. It’s by Anne Lyle, and it’s called “The Alchemist of Souls”. I will try not to be spoiler-y with this recommendation. Short version: In an alternate Elizabethan England, an out-of-work swordsman must discover the secret that ties him, his brother, and a strange foreigner together before any of them are killed on the job. Things I like about this book: The story is gripping. The details about the setting are great (theater buff and amateur historian says). Unlike some, this book makes it easy to see, hear, taste, feel, and smell a huge city in 16-something. Also, the pacing is strangely helpful. It’s a long one, and there are times when you just have to put it down and go pick your kid up from school. The pacing of the book puts lull spots in convenient places (a couple of quiet paragraphs, not padding or exposition or boring stuff, just spots where there’s a breather), with enough hook before and after that you have to pick it back up. But you know the character’s not going to die a quick death on page 45 while you’re in line at the school. I have not the faintest clue how Ms. Lyle pulled that off, but it’s a skill I wish I had. Link: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_17?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=the%20alchemist%20of%20souls&sprefix=the+alchemist+of+%2Cstripbooks%2C229&rh=i%3Astripbooks%2Ck%3Athe%20alchemist%20of%20souls
Me: I wrote a short story and had it published in an anthology! The anthology is called “The Adventure Of Creation” and all the stories have that theme. My story has to do with radio and is called “Make a Sound.” It’s fairly mainstream, upbeat, maybe a little funny. My story in a sentence: When an advertiser requires the determined DJ of a backwater radio station to get award-winning sound bites, she coaxes her under-enthusiastic audience into performing better than anyone expected. Most of the stories in the anthology are sci-fi/fantasy, and some are dark. They are all excellent! Here is the anthology link: http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Creation-Foreword-Sideways-Anthology/dp/3956810007/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384786696&sr=1-1&keywords=the+adventure+of+creation

SO. MUCH. COOLNESS to wade through! Chuck – awesome idea. Keep it up. Except that I may spend so much time chasing literary butterflies that I’ll forget to write the sequel to Daughter of Oreveille (http://www.amazon.com/Daughter-Oreveille-Cycle-Book-One-ebook/dp/B00ESK2DZS/) and the villagers…er..readers will come hunt me down. That would be bad.
Daughter of Oreveille is the story of a spoiled princess of the Fae who rejects everything her world stands for in order to craft the life of her own choosing. And deals with the consequences of her choices.
When you finish Daughter, check out Maid of Sherwood by Shanti Krishnamurty. I absolutely love what she’s down with the Robin Hood story – and you thought Maid Marion’s whole job was to sit in some tower waiting to be rescued!

Stant Litore writes zombie Bible stories; yes, Bible stories, with zombies. The covenant with God? Because of zombies. All those nitpicky rules in Leviticus? Because of zombies. Why did the Egyptians build those pyramids? Because of zombies. He has three books out now, with a fourth being released as a Kindle serial through 47North for $1.99. Go check it out! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FQK16DO. They’re all stand-alone books, so you start with whichever one tickles your fancy.
As for my own thing…tired of the same old medieval European settings and characters for your epic fantasy reading? Love myth retellings with a feminist slant? Want to read books with PoC as the heroes? Then my debut novel The Bone Flower Throne might be for you. Tenth century Toltec epic historical fantasy, with gods and wars and magic. Neat promo idea – thank you!
First, not me: This year I discovered indie author Toni Dwiggins’ Forensic Geology Series. It’s great, geeky, suspenseful, science thriller goodness. “Badwater,” set mostly in Death Valley, centers on the theft of nuclear waste and our forensic geologist heroine’s attempts to stop the bad guy from executing a terrorist attack; “Volcano Watch” is centered on a small town where murder coincides with the growing expectation the local volcano is going to blow its top (disaster lovers will dig this one). The premise of using the study of rocks and soil to solve crimes is fascinating, and I love the heroine of these books, who is quietly tough and smart with a kernel of understated emotion. The author is at:
http://www.tonidwiggins.com
As for me: My novels are science thrillers, too, but they also have humor and a touch of romance. The storm chasing adventures “Funnel Vision” and “Tornado Pinball” are set against the backdrop of Tornado Alley amid the nomadic culture of storm chasers. In the first, Kansas photographer Judy and expert storm chaser Jack have dueling destinies as they pursue storms for art and science and ultimately face a monster tornado; in the second, Jack must help a TV crew launch a human probe into a tornado as they are plagued by disasters and a hilariously egoistic rival. The third Storm Seekers book, “Zap Bang,” is on its way. I’m a storm chaser, so these novels are authentic (and entertaining) in their portrayal of the culture. More info:

I want you to meet Tex Thompson (aka @tex_maam). She is a debut author whose book ONE NIGHT IN SIXES was just sold in a 3 book deal to Solaris. She’s witty, she’s clever, she’s a hoot to chat with and I think she’s going to be a serious force to be reckoned with. She writes western fantasy. That in and of itself kicks ass. What’s more, she’s unabashedly in love with My Little Ponies. OH! And her Twitter handle is a reference to Blazing Saddles. I don’t know what more you could ask for. I love Tex and think she’s absolutely peachtastic. Her online home is http://www.thetexfiles.com. (Seriously, her wit is amazeballs.)
And now, for some self-pimpage.
My debut novel WILD CARD comes out ONE WEEK FROM TODAY! I’m so excited I might explode into my component parts of chai and sarcasm. WILD CARD is the story of Catherine Sharp–geek, tech nerd and all-around Ms. Fix it. She can fix anything but her broken life. And to make it worse, her soul belongs to Eris. Yes, that Eris. When Coyote–yes, that Coyote–approaches her and says he now owns her soul, Cat discovers that she is the prime bet in Mayhem’s weekly poker game. Now, she has to fight multiple trickster gods to get her soul back. Her only help is Marius, an insatiable satyr with his own debts to Discord. If the two play their cards right, they win freedom. Assuming they don’t kill each other first.
If you go here (http://www.entangledpublishing.com/wild-card/ ) you can find all the pre-order linkage and read the first chapter. Woot!

I wrote a book! It’s a fantasy novel called DARK HEART, set in a world where mortals overthrew the jealous, brawling elder gods and then rose to godhood themselves, only to become embroiled in the same rivalries and battles as their predecessors. The sequel is coming early next year, and it’s pretty damn good if I say so myself.
And as far as promoting someone else, I’ll mention what I’m currently reading: EIGHTY DAYS, by Matthew Goodman. It’s a remarkable true story about two women reporters, working for different newspapers in New York at the end of the 19th century, who as a publicity stunt set out to travel around the world – in opposite directions – each trying to beat Jules Verne’s fictional record (and each other).

AFTER THE RISING by Orna Ross
A story about family and war in Ireland, from a female point of view. Three generations of women. Deep emotion and high-quality writing.
I’m about 75% of the way through this indie novel and I’m very consumed by it. Nice hints of feminism. But don’t read the “From the Author” part on Amazon because I just did and it contains a huge spoiler!! (Ugh!!!!! Why, Ms. Ross, why?!)

THE ALIGNMENT
My debut novel that comes out this week!
A fantasy about lovers united by the stars and the family striving to tear them apart. Mountains, magic, and an assembly line of stealthy killers. I’d like to promote my e-buddy and awesome indie author, Dicey Grenor, who writes a hilarious and captivating (but beware, risque) fantasy series about a woman who tries to cure her narcolepsy by becoming a vampire. Welp, it didn’t quite pan out the way she had hoped, and now she’s a narcoleptic vampire. The first book of the series is called Sleepy Willow’s Bonded Soul.
I’ve just completed the final book of my Gray Tower Trilogy, which is a mashup of magic and espionage set in an alternate WWII where the Nazis unleash occult forces upon the world and the Allies scramble to fight back using wizards trained by the Gray Tower. My protagonist, Isabella, is an alchemist and spy; she wants to retire–but then betrayal, a vampiric warlock stalking her, and a deadly secret held by the very people who trained her ain’t gonna make it easy. The first book, The Tower’s Alchemist, is free:

Thanks for the promo op, Chuck. First off, since we’re coming up on the Christmas season, I’ve got a different kind of seasonal Ya dark fantasy for you. The Coal Elf, by Maria De Vivo. http://www.amazon.com/The-Coal-Elf-Maria-Devivo/dp/1606192167/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384792708&sr=8-1&keywords=the+coal+elf
Ember Skye is a fed up teenage Coal Elf with a big ashy chip on her shoulder. Having been torn away from a carefree life and forced into a world of dirt and darkness has started to get the best of her. And being the only girl-elf working as a coal miner at the North Pole doesn’t help much either!
Then there’s Sturd: a power-hungry, twisted elf with a checkered past and a serious grudge against Ember. Slowly but surely, his maniacal tendencies are revealed, leaving Ember with the sacred “Naughty List” literally in her lap.
When a mysterious illness threatens to decimate elves both Above and Underground, Ember is thrust into a journey that will see her confront the literal and figurative demons of her past and lead her to the head of the North Pole himself.
Yes! Santa is real. But this isn’t your childhood Christmas tale!
As for myself, my debut contemporary fantasy, Knight of Flame, hit the virtual streets in November. Print edition comes out in December.
http://www.amazon.com/Knight-Flame-Knights-Elementalis-Scott-ebook/dp/B00F7SXQ8I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384792875&sr=8-1&keywords=knight+of+flame
Fire. The most chaotic of the primal elements. When wielded properly by the Knight of Flame, it burns like the sun. Otherwise, it slowly consumes the Knight, burning away his control, driving him towards dark deeds.
Stationed in Tampa, FL, Develor Quinteele, sixth Knight of Flame, waits impatiently for the predicted emergence of the last Gray Lord, his Order’s ancient enemy. Hampered by a centuries-old tragedy, Dev knows of only one way to control his elemental power—rage. It broils just below his surface, waiting for the slightest provocation to set it alight.
After a brutal attack by the Gray Lord’s minions for which Dev is blamed, he’s stripped of his freedom until he learns to control his violent impulses. With the help of his fellow Knights, can he balance his rage and unlock his true elemental potential to prevent Tampa’s devastation?
“In Knight of Flame Scott re-imagines traditional fantasy and forges something new from old metal—a fast-paced thriller that delivers a healthy dose of wonder. As enjoyable as it is engrossing.” ~ David Farland, International Best-Selling Author
Thanks again,
Scott

I don’t have anything of my own to promote but I’ve read a few books lately that I think need more love.
The first is Vicious by V.E. Schwab. This is not your typical superhero/supervillian book and it is beyond amazing! I can’t easily put my love for this book into words but I can say that it is my favorite book so far this year!
The second is Eternal Echoes by Anastasia Virgas. I finished this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the different deities that she pulled from several mythologies and it was refreshing to read about shifters that weren’t werewolves.
The third is The Darwin Elevator by Jason Hough. I picked it up because it is currently only $2 for the Kindle. This book is so awesome! It reminded me again of why I love sci-fi. I’m going to my local bookstore to pick up the rest of the series tonight and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

My favorite indie comic to come out this year is still Red Museum by Ramiro R., an anthology of eerie horror and short stories. Ramiro is one of my favorite artists. He’s a great guy, has a cool girlfriend (who’s also a writer), and does some stellar work. The book is only $10 on Amazon, so if you’re looking for weird and unique visual material, it’s worth every penny.
Welcome to the RED MUSEUM. Ramiro Roman’s surreal horror compilation is unlike any you’ve ever seen or read before. These dreamlike stories verge on nightmare-ish—equal parts terrifying, uncomfortable, and darkly humorous. Get ready to meet mutant families, magic cubes made of flesh, the alien outside your window, and a truly disturbed individual who could be in your apartment building right now. Both frightening and thought-provoking. And brought to you in glorious black & white! You won’t want to leave Ramiro’s RED MUSEUM.
As for me, my debut horror novel Fleshtrap is coming out December 17th. Pre-order on Amazon and get 25% the cover price.
Casey Way has been haunted by visions of his dead pedophile father for the last twenty years, tormented by hazy recollections of his father’s murder at the hands of his stepmother. The trauma has left Casey burdened with guilt, which has manifested in debilitating insomnia and violent hallucinations.
As the anniversary of his father s murder approaches, his step-sister Mariska takes him back to the scene of the crime: their childhood home, to confront their past and finally get some closure.
Instead, something follows Casey back out into the world, something ugly, violent, familiar. It begins a vicious spiral of insanity as people around him begin disappearing and dying, hiding behind the faces of Casey s loved ones. Somehow tied to his father s murder, Casey begins digging into his fragmented memories for an answer. What he finds instead brings Casey face-to-face with his greatest fears as he struggles to end the nightmares that have haunted all of their lives.
