Macro Monday Is One Thing That Looks Like Another
That is a bee-fly. It is not a bee, but rather, a fly that looks like a bee. Can you blame the fly? Flies are ugly little raisins. Bees are awesome. Everyone loves bees. If you are a fly, try to look like a bee instead. Bees get honey. Flies get turds. There’s your life lesson. Don’t be a fly. Be a bee. The end.

Nice photo. Bee flies actually feed from the pollen/nectar of flowers, hence the long tongue. They don’t eat turds like other flies. They are important pollinators. Anyway, if flies didn’t eat turds, we would have poo everywhere. I say, cheers to the turd-eating flies – we need you too. Was that Nerdy enough? 🙂

I apologize — I actually knew this stuff and should’ve clarified that. Many flies eat all kinds of not-turdy things. 🙂

Bee flies also don’t just look like bees, their larvae eat bee larvae. There are lots of flies that look like bees that aren’t bee flies (i.e., hoverflies).

It’s so furry it looks mammalian.

As in busy like a bee or shoo fly pie?

But what if you’re born a fly? Perhaps you buy a bee costume. A fly in bee’s clothing?

Nawww look how cute and fluffy he is. I just want to give him a big hug. Yes I do. Yes I do. He’s so cute, I just want to give him a widdle cuddly wuddly…
Ahem.
I watched the additional material on the DVD of Eight Legged Freaks (yes, I watched the movie, THEN watched the additionals… I’m a little bit sad and pathetic) and they said when they tried to come up with a massive spider, they tried just using a big, big picture of a tarantula, but it was so fluffy it looked far too cute…

My tarantula is both cute and kind of adorable. If I breathe on her she freaks out and hides, convinced I’m going to eat her. When I feed her, she hides in the corner and does the tarantula equivalent of “if I cover my eyes you can’t see me.”

A bee fly, not a bee
That is the question
