It is time to vote.
We had over 60 entries to the awkward author photo contest.
They are basically amazing.
Here’s how this works.
You can check out the whole gallery at this link.
Each photo is numbered (and hastily captioned by yours truly, if you care).
Find the number of your FAVORITE awkward author photo.
Drop that number in a comment, and post the comment.
You can only vote once.
Voting will be open until Sunday the 28th, noon EST.
I’ll tally ’em up on Monday.
Given the number of great photos, I’m actually going to give a t-shirt / mug combo to two different winners (the top two), in addition to two of you randomly getting #amwritingmotherfuckers Post-It notes.
So, that’s it.
Get to voting.
(Also, a head’s up: a few of you sent in emails with multiple photos, which counts as multiple entries. Given that I don’t know which photo was actually your entry, that regrettably disqualified you from inclusion.)
Tamara Guirado says:
I vote for 29—a beautiful mix of the plebeian and the fantastic.

Photo #13 wins my vote. All were very funny, though!

14. loved several but that was “the one”

Laura Roberts says:
This is a tough decision, but if we’re judging “awkward” as opposed to “unintentionally hilarious” or “brilliantly awful,” I’ll have to go with #61 for the matching tight pants and boots combo + “serious author” pose against a tree. So much awkwardness, so little time! (And, for the love of god, can someone please inform pro photographers that posing people against trees is totally unacceptable, even for a high school yearbook? Thanks.)

Photo #12–it just really is a cherry shot. Heh. Nailed awkward! (But arrrrggggh, it was hard to choose! Some of these were so awkward they were brilliant!)

# 17 – Very Hemingwayesque!

Some of these were really awesome or beautiful, but not awkward. Since we’re voting for awkward though: #32 is my choice. That is definitely an awkward writer photo!

Gotta go with #13.
September 25, 2014 — 12:03 PM

Loving #27. Mainly as it’s the kind of hilariously bad photo a publisher would actually use on the inside jacket.

Melissa Clare says:
These were so good. Hard to choose, but in the end #62 killed it. It’s my vote because it’s so insanely awkward it’s hard to look at, and yet so simple… I could see someone cluelessly using this as their bio photo. Awesome.

Gammelor Goodenow says:
My vote goes to 27, because I’m sure I’ve seen it on a book cover somewhere. Number 13 is too perfect. I love it, but it’s not awkward enough. Number 12 is my favorite awkward photo, but doesn’t seem like an author photo to me.
And I love the caption Chuck put on mine! Much better than what I was thinking, something like “my one true love.”
September 25, 2014 — 12:48 PM
Kevin B. says:
I’m going with 13. The combination of the chicken and that smirky stare makes it just right.
Close contender is 35. That one is just dorky enough that I can see it used as an actual author picture.
I doubted about 17, but ultimately decided that it is just too awesome to be awkward.

Suz Korb says:
Number 14 is clearly the best author pic if all time.

27, it has to be 27. (Although 14 get’s honorable mention for having All the Pipes, ALL of them!)

I like 32. The sheer volume of half-consumed bottles of alcohol + enforced cat wave + past due notice….the devil of awkwardness is in the details.

My vote goes for #13 because CHICKEN! So much better than a unicorn plushie (#53 should get a mention though because if you notice the demon eyed cat beside him justifies why a grown man needs a unicorn plushie – a simple cry of help! ) and it was a toss up for me between #13 and #56. Although I love your comment – all I could see was pyro. “I like to watch things burn” spoken softly with innocence. Your comment on #3 is priceless!

Lots of very great entries, despite the weirdly statistically significant number of cats, sherry snifters and glasses. *g* But I like the creative concept of #21 best, so that’s my vote.

Delores Robinson says:
Such a great contest and kudos to all entrants for your bravery, creativity, and/or ability to be creepy.
My “winner” for awkward author photo is #32. Awesome—somebody’s got her afternoon drunk on after a hard morning at the keyboard!
I have to give a shout-out to some close runners-up, though: 13, 14, 41, 59, 46, 1, and 3. Thank you, all!
