Here’s your assignment:
In the comments, I want to know:
A book you read in 2013 you’d recommend.
A comic book you dug in 2013.
A TV show.
A movie.
A game.
One of each.
Just one.
Get shut of the idea of “best” — just, you know, if you had one of each of these that you could recommend to me or to everyone else reading here, what would it be?
Bonus question:
And why?
Your 2013 list:
GO.
ari lessiers says:
A book: Leigh Bardugo’s; Seige and Storm, thats #2 in the Grisha series. The first one was good. Number two blew me out of the water and left me reeling.
A comic book you dug in 2013.
A TV show. Hmm, I was up till 6am yesterday watching Les Revenants / The Returned cos Steven King tweeted it was good. So addictive, moody and French, and super super creepy. I love Victor, I also weirdly am fond of the serial killers love story…
A movie. Catching Fire, waited all year for it and it was awesome.
Comic; I follow a webcomic called Hemlock which I adore.
Game / can I swap this for an Ad since i don’t game? Tullamore Dew Irish Whisky ad, was beautiful, my fave of the year.

Book: Jim Hines’ Princess Series. Why? ‘Cause, I mean, it’s awesome. Also I’ve been slacking in book-reading this year…curse you, internets! I’m still in the middle of Under the Empyrean Sky because the internet keeps sucking me back in with its fanfic and endless procrastination options.
Comic Book: Dragon Age: Until We Sleep. Because I’m 100% a Dragon Age fangirl, plus it features my favorite pirate queen ever. Also the sexiest beardless dwarf ever to exist (he makes up for the lack of beard with a magnificent pelt of chest hair).
TV Show: Lost Girl. Supernatural creatures, romance, adventure, snark–it’s like Buffy with threesomes. If you haven’t seen this show yet, you need to.
Movie: The Avengers. I’m slow, okay? But I loved it, and it was awesome, and I’m sure everyone and their mother has already seen it so let’s just leave it at that.
Game: Tomb Raider. Gorgeous scenery, compelling story. One of my favorite things about it is how it totally subverts a common horror/action trope in a way that I can’t specify without giving stuff away. Curse you, spoiler gods! Oh, plus super-heavy on the lesbian subtext. Always a winner with me.

Lost Girl is awesome! Waiting for Netflix to post season three!

Niki Bradley (@jnbradley) says:
Book: NOTHING TO ENVY by Barbara Demick.
I had a lot of favorite books this year (Ready Player One was my Runner Up), but NOTHING TO ENVY really stuck with me. It follows a handful of North Koreans over a span of 15 years. Real people, real stories of love, death, starvation, desertion. I’ve never been so touched, enlightened, and appalled all at once.
TV: DISAPPEARED
Okay, well, maybe I established that I am “entertained” by people with unpleasant circumstances. DISAPPEARED (it’s on Netflix) is a series from Investigation Discovery about real missing persons cases. Part of me hopes I randomly see one of these people (alive) and can help solve a decade old cold case. Otherwise it gives me something outside myself to worry about. And to Google.
MOVIE:
I was most excited about STAR TREK. I jumped on board with the reboot, so I’m not a “real” trekkie or anything, but damn those movies are fun!
COMIC:
Finally got around to reading THE CROW. Besides the bad hair, I thought it was beautiful. The movie did a pretty good job of recreating the feel of it, I think.
GAME:
HARRY POTTER LEGOS. Because… Harry Pottery and Legos.

Robin says:
Book – Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh. This is number 12 in the series so you can’t start here but this was really good as is the entire series.
Comic books- stopped long ago so I could eat.
TV – Sleepy Hallow. Never miss it
Movie – can’t remember the last movie I watched.
Game- still playing Wow…..
Love to escape…. 🙂

TV: Walking Dead, Downton Abbey, Diary of a Call Girl, Battlestar Galactica
Movies: Clerks 1 & 2, Pitch Perfect, Woman in Black, Evil Dead (remake)
Games: The Last of Us, Deadly Premonition, Beyond: Two Souls, Skyrim, Tomb Raider, Dishonored

Alex Kane (@alexjkane) says:
Book: TELL EVERYONE I SAID HI by Chad Simpson. Chad’s another writer from my small Midwestern hometown who sees the world in a fresh, often heartbreaking light. Think Denis Johnson without all the drug-culture stuff. His stuff has appeared in McSweeney’s and Esquire; dude will make you weep with his words.
Comic: THE WAKE by Scott Snyder. This one’s only halfway finished–issue #5 of 10 came out pretty recently–but it’s one of the most original examples of creature horror I can recall, and it seems to be getting more and more interesting as it goes along. Plenty of insane surprises in each issue.
TV Show: Don’t really watch much television, to be honest. I just sort of poke around Netflix from time to time. I recently discovered BREAKING BAD, but everyone’s seen that by now–so instead I’ll recommend this quirky, at times perplexing gem: DON’T TRUST THE B IN APARTMENT 23. It’s not nearly as misogynistic or offensive as the cutesy title implies; in fact, it’s pretty damn funny.
Movie: THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES was sufficiently fucking epic. One of the best crime pictures since The Departed or Heat, far as I’m concerned. It’s a three-act saga that spans a decade and a half.
Game: Just discovered my pick, which is without a doubt THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK BETWEEN WORLDS. Such a perfect game in every way. It melds modern handheld capability with enough retroism to appeal to both old-school diehards and young gamers alike. Falling somewhere in the middle of the spectrum myself–I grew up on 1999’s OCARINA OF TIME–I’m finding plenty to enjoy in this new treasure for the Nintendo 3DS.
December 9, 2013 — 10:30 PM
Wes says:
Book: Black Dog by Levi Pinfold… Oh wait, adult books..right…Um,
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
Comic Books: N/A
TV: Sherlock
Why, Benedict Cumberbatch. “Brainy is the new sexy.”
Movie: I have a three.five.year.old tornado. So, I think I saw one movie this year, Star Trek.
Would recommend, also, Benedict Cumberbatch with a side of Zachary Quinto. YAY!
Game: Tag, bedbugs, also “where is *fill in the blank* Mama?”

Beverly says:
I am going to specifically go with people who are not clients, to avoid that bias, but I damn sakes love my people. Anyhow.
A book you read in 2013 you’d recommend: Mountain Home, by Bracken MacLeod. That man can write. I was hooked from page one, and with so little time to read, that means something.
A comic book you dug in 2013: I have not read anything other than Fables this year that wasn’t somehow connected to what I do, so I am going with that. It isn’t as vital as it once was, in many ways, but I keep coming back to its complex characters and storylines.
A TV show: It isn’t from 2013, but I first saw it in 2013: Spaced. Early Simon Pegg & Co. 😀
A movie: Kill List. I am not going to say why, for fear of spoilers, but this is a highly recommended movie.
A game: I haven’t played any video games in ages, but there is the board game Pandemic which I just plain love this year. It’s got so many mechanics that work together seamlessly. One tiny bit of imbalance and your team is going to have a hell of a time not losing to the viruses.
December 9, 2013 — 10:36 PM
ksbrennan says:
Book: The Shining Girls, by Lauren Beukes. Forget book of the year, this may be my new favourite book of all time. I already want to re-read it. I want to impregnate it so that it will spawn increasingly horrifying book-children that I can then devour, like a cannibalistic polar bear eating its own children because global warming has reduced its hunting options. Or, maybe something less creepy than that.
Comic Book: This was technically released early 2012, but I read it in 2013, so I’m going to count it anyway. The Fables Deluxe Edition Book Four blew my mind. Snow White’s tragic story at the farm destroyed me, and 1001 Nights of Snowfall made me fall right back in love.
TV Show: Sleepy Hollow has been a delightful surprise this season.
Movie: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Although, I am looking forward to seeing Saving Mr. Banks when it comes out.
Game: Haven’t played a lot this year, but I enjoyed Tomb Raider.

kelouisaally says:
Book: Going back and forth over this, but since I actually did recommend it the other day, I’m going to go with Metronome by Lorant Deutsch. This is the book I’d like to read before going to Paris. It tells you the history of the city for the last fifteen hundred years or so with reference to the current city. For instance, such and such a tomb can be found at 42 Rue de something, but you have to go into this parking garage and open this door and go down these rickety steps. It’s a bit like a treasure map.
Comic: Well, I don’t really read comic books because I’m not fond of pictures with my words, so I’m going to choose Get Fuzzy by Darby Conley because Bucky makes me snort with laughter.
TV Show: With the 3rd season finally on the horizon, is there any other show but Sherlock? Plus, it’s one of the only things I’ve ever watched thinking that visuals of the show are just blindingly brilliant. The multi-camera spins and the text on the screen just look amazing. I could gush on for a book here, so I’ll just stop.
Movie: The Hobbit. Because 1- HobbitJohn (sorry, Martin Freeman) and 2- I really am a sucker for epic, breathtaking scenery. I find it just damned amazing. I want to take a movie like that back to about 1950 and blow their minds with the special effects. And I like to think that Gollum would freak them right out.
Game: Organ Trail. Spoof game of Oregon Trail, where you have to manage your travelers, food, ammo, etc, to get across the country during a zombie apocalypse. Cracks me up. I haven’t made it across alive yet. 🙂

Book: Vicious by V.E. Schwab, NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, and about 40 others.
Comic: Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon
TV Show: Sleepy Hollow, Almost Human
Movie: RiffTrax Live Santa Clause Conquers the Martians. Plan to hit 47 Ronin before the end of the year.
Game: Kickstarter-ed Ever, Jane, online regency RPG. Not ready to play yet, but just the concept makes me squee.

morag donnachie says:
Wow, really only one?
Ok, Book: The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman – An oldie but a goodie!
Comic Book: Wow, I don’t read nearly as many as I’d like these days but the Sandman series keeps me coming back for more every time.
TV Show: Misfits, or maybe Fresh Meat, possibly QI I really can’t pick just one out of those three. Then again, apart from kids tv those are really probably the only shows I watch!
Movie: Just a couple of days ago I would probably have said Kick Ass 2 or something but the other night my Hubbie and I watched Nude Nuns With Big Guns. Wow! Best Film Ever! Except the kids kept getting up ever couple of minute so we had to keep pausing it! When we do something boring and innocent they sleep like the dead, but the minute we try and get up to any adult type activities they are up and down like yo yo’s WHY?????
Game: *Hangs head in shame* I don’t really get to play any more unless it’s with the kids. I suppose Minecraft…my Hubs and I resisted it for ages but the kids finally broke us and now we can’t get enough of it.

David Wilson says:
Book: Embassytown, a must-read for word-nerds and lovers of linguistics
Comics:
TV: Leverage, Some of the best character development for a non-serial show.
Movie: August Rush, the only movie to make me cry. Also Robin Williams.
Game: Warframe, Robot Ninjas in Space, do I need to say more.

Book: :Life After Life by Kate Atkinson for the way it plays with time and characters so artlessly..
Comic book:: Don’t read ’em, never have. Don’t know why. Will give some a try in the new year.
Movie: Pride and Prejudice keeps me coming back again and again. Loved the book but the movie’s actually better.
TV Show: The Good Wife. As a recovering attorney, it reminds me why I’m glad I took early retirement.
Game: I’ve been hooked on The Sims ever since it first came out. My personal life is a mess, always has been. This game gives me the illusion (delusion?) of being able to make it all come out right.

Sabrina Jade Howard says:
Book: ‘Fledgling,’ by Nicole Conway – Why? Because dragons. That’s why. Enough said.
Comic book: None this year. They’ve kinda lost their lustre.
TV Show: The Walking Dead!!!!!! – Zombies!
Movie: Catching Fire – They actually interpreted a book well for once!
Game: Skyrim – (You meant a video game, right?) It’s really complex, and their are so many awesome quests.
December 10, 2013 — 7:40 PM
RSAGARCIA says:
Book: The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey. It was flawed, but the story had that pacing that keeps you reading. And I want to read the next one, so I guess it worked.
Comic Book: None for some time. I could never afford comic books in my country, so it’s been years since I tried to spring for one.
TV Show: One? Seriously? Okay, Longmire. Because it’s amazing storytelling, with compelling characters and it’s always a beautiful day at the Red Pony and continual soiree!
Movie: At the very beginning of this year I saw a little seen movie called Attack the Block! from Britain. I’m recommending it because it’s truly the coolest movie you’ve never seen. Looks at modern British society in a very different way–with an alien attack!
Game: Don’t have a gaming system, but I’ve heard good things about The Last of US.
December 10, 2013 — 10:27 PM
Beverly says:
Ah yes! Attack the Block was quite good.
December 10, 2013 — 10:31 PM

I know, right? Those aliens were quite good for a low budget movie. And the acting was really good too.

Exactly. I also appreciated that they (apparently, to my uninformed perspective,) didn’t pull back from accents/word usage. You either knew it or had to figure it out. I like not having things overly explained or pre-digested.
December 11, 2013 — 9:10 AM
Robyn says:
Book: City of Thieves by David Benioff. Who would have thought a quest to find eggs for a wedding cake during the Siege of Leningrad could be so hilarious and heart-breaking and bloody awesome? ME, THAT’S WHO.
Comic book: Just got on the Saga train and brothers and sisters, I am never, ever getting off.
TV Show: Borgen. You might think a show about Danish political intrigue would be boring… WRONG-O. Maybe it’s because the show tackles gender inequality, racial tensions, the corruption of political systems and the struggle to maintain one’s principles when tempted by personal gain… or maybe it’s because Danes are actually all the gracile descendants of Viking beserkers in expensive suits. Who knows.
Movie: Rust and Bone. This movie did not get the accolades as it deserved. Technically came out last year, but still. And bonus, it’s based on stories by the amazing (and Canadian, boo-yah) Craig Davidson from his collection of the same name. I still use this movie to puncture any self-pity I might indulge in.
Game: The adrenaline-filled, high-stakes game of get-back-into-bed-before-the-toilet-stops-running. If you lose, the monsters under the bed are allowed to breach the blanket barrier and drag you down into their hellish sub-mattress lair.
December 10, 2013 — 10:38 PM
leifthesailor says:
Book – I know it’s an old one but it’s new to me. Patient Zero by Jon Maberry was an amazing zombie/military science and the thing is, is that I don’t go for zombie literature. Amazing, I know.
Video Game – Grand Theft Auto 5. Such an amazing comically psychotic nonsense of a game.
TV Show – This one is interesting seeing as how I don’t have cable.
Movie – Cloud Atlas was pretty amazing visually and emotionally.
Comic Book – Wow, it has certainly been a while. Maximum Carnage series of Spiderman?
December 10, 2013 — 10:47 PM
Eric B says:
A book: Chasing the Moon, by A Lee Martinez – because it’s a contemporary demons-and-magic story that’s funny instead of gritty, like Douglas Adams with a more balanced irreverent-tangent-to-actual-plot ratio.
A comic book: Saga has been mentioned (deservedly so), so I’m going to go with King City, whose collected trade paperback I will now utterly fail to describe: It’s this weird future urban sci-fi story about demons invading and alien gangsters and addicts who literally become the drug they abuse and “cat ninjas” whose cats can do absolutely anything if given the right drug but it’s all set in this lighthearted future-retro-urban cityscape full of overly curvy artwork and punny dialogue. A few of the ending panels are tough to parse, but it’s ridiculously entertaining.
A TV show: Brooklyn Nine-Nine. – The humor is more than “all lame sex innuendos, all the time” (Hi, Two Broke Girls!) and every character is unique, hilarious, and deeper than they first appear. Except maybe for Scully–he’s about as deep as a birdbath. Watch it before Fox gives it the Firefly/Ben and Kate treatment.
A movie: Troll Hunter – A hidden gem I accidentally Netflix-ed. It’s a straight-faced mockumentary about a group of young filmmakers who meet a top-secret (but barely funded) government employee whose job is to exterminate trolls, which range in size from “elephant” to “daikaiju”. Smaller, grittier, and infinitely less spectacular than Pacific Rim, but to my surprise I actually liked it better. I think because there’s not a drop of Hollywood formula anywhere in it. Also, the scene in which they discuss troll physiology = lovely world building.
A game: Far Cry Blood Dragon – because it’s Far Cry 3 with 100% less creepy self-importance and sex abuse and 1000% more neon-lit Tyrannosaurs and 80’s gaming references.
December 11, 2013 — 12:15 AM
Dangerfield says:
A book: American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennett. I’m recommending this all over the place. It’s the best bits of Twin Peaks meeting the best bits of Lovecraft, with a beautiful story about motherhood intertwining.
A comic book: Morning Glories. Although it showed me that comics do not work for me, I loved the idea of it and am definitely going to plough through once it’s finished. Conspiracies, school uniforms, time travel: what’s not to love?
TV: Lost Girl. It’s delightfully campy, aggressively sex positive and features a fabulous chuck it all in and see what happens approach to mythology. An RPG campaign set in this world would be a shitload of fun.
A movie: I don’t know if I’ve even seen a movie this year.
A game: representing the under fives here with Willy’s Wiggly Webs. A super fun co-op with scissors.
December 11, 2013 — 4:29 AM
Lindsey Bonner says:
A book you read. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Why? Read it in one night and I loved the book within the book. How great to be able to create a fictional series of books that your other fictional character writes fanfic about.
A comic book you dug. I’m going to go with manga counting in the comic category. Nana series by Ai Yazawa. Why? Love triangles, rock bands, fate! Only downside is the author hasn’t finished the series and due to some heath problems it might never get completed. Cries big buckets of tears.
A TV show. Orange is the new black. Why? I was blown away by this show and devoured it like TV crack. Computer screen was not damaged by licking every last morsel of goodness only strange looks from my husband. Complex characters and stories that are rich and compelling. This is a show with women, even (GASP) non-white women which is a refreshing change of pace.
A movie. Silver Linings Playbook. Why? I have a sibling that is bi-polar. Movies about mental health that are genuine are hard to come by.
A game. Cards against Humanity (Board games totally count!) Why? Because the creators of this game understood how amazingly hilarious and wonderful it is to be a terrible person. Also bonus points for foul language in a board game in my world.

swordsoftheancients says:
Book: Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It was magical, reminiscent of all the adventures of childhood. On top of that, it maintained a great blend of eerie and beautiful that seems to be Gaiman’s specialty.
Comic book: I’m kicking myself for waiting this long to start on Joe Hill’s Locke & Key. It’s smart, well-drawn, and creepy. Working on the second volume now.
TV show: I got lost in the first season of American Horror Story in the best way. I’ve always preferred psychological horror to gore horror, and AHS did not disappoint. I can’t wait to try out the second season and see how it compares (despite being an essentially unrelated plot).
Movie: Hands down favorite of the year, despite its flaws, was Pacific Rim. It was a fun, over-the-top tribute to kaiju movies, and I regret nothing about seeing it at the midnight premiere.
Game: Cards Against Humanity. Enough said.

Dita Frank says:
A book you read in 2013 you’d recommend.
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. And yes, I am counting the entire series as one book, because that was how I read it (it was a heavy book). Oh my god. What a mind. Douglas Adams is amazing. And funny, and bizarre, and brilliant. There are some sentences in those books that I read 8 or 10 times in a row, and finally gave up and moved on because I was not going to understand them. So, Don’t Panic, remember your towel, and…..42 😛
A comic book you dug in 2013.
The Private Eye, by Panel Syndicate.
So. Bloody. Brilliant. And who else wants their very own Dreamcoat??
A TV show.
Firefly.
One season. Aired out of order. Screwed by Fox. THE BEST FUCKNG SHOW ON THE PLANET. If you are reading this instead of going to watch this show….*backs into corner, muttering “two by two, hands of blue, two by two, hands of blue, two by…”*
A movie.
Frozen.
Best. Disney. Movie. In. Years. Good songs, good dialogue, brilliant script/plot/characters (hint: one of them’s *in singsong* Santa! See if you can figure it out for yourself).
Also, NO JUDGING BY THE TRAILERS. The trailers belong to another movie. Seriously, all you get from the trailers is that the main characters sister has snow magic. And there’s a snowman called Olaf. The plot kept on surprising me, and it is kind of a mile stone as far as Disney Princess’s and the saving or being saved thing. Watch it.
A game
Candy Crush.
I am addicted. Somehow, it can be very easy, very enjoyable, great way to turn off your brain for a bit, very captivating, very stressful and hard (it took me a week to t past a level…finally I handed it to my sister, and she got me past it). It’s a very interesting game, as we all know that there are a tone of super similar games out there (think Jewel) and yet somehow, this one is the best.

I like to talk, so now I find another excuse to talk.
BOOK:I read a book this year called “A Good Death.” I recommend this book because it’s realistic and I connected to the characters more than usual. It is unlike any book I ever read. And psh. I read a lot of books.
COMIC:I just got into reading Scott Pilgrim and yeah, that’s not anything new.
TV:I don’t watch much TV besides the late night Conan maybe and a god-awful soap opera called Awkward.
MOVIE:I love movies, there is a movie called “The Knowing.” it’s oldish, 2009. But I found it to be slightly morbid and dark, but included some pretty cool conceptions.
GAME: A new game? UHHH. I usually stick to my Zelda and Kingdom Hearts. But a new Zelda game came out and and and yeah. That counts as something I played in 2013.
Why do I recommend these things? I don’t know. I just wanted the extra credit.

A book you read. Cold Days by Jim Butcher. Why? Because it’s the Dresden files, Chicago’s only magician detective ever.
A comic book you dug. I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All love to Joss Whedon!
A TV show. Sons of Anarchy. Because Kurt Sutter took Shakespeare to the limit this season!
A movie. Elysium. Because it really struck a chord with its depiction of the Haves and the Have-nots.
A game. Texas Hold-em. Because I’m going to Vegas in February and want to play with the big boys.

I feel it necessary to point out that answers might change based on audience, and you don’t clarify whether we’re recommending it to you specifically or just in general. (Things in my mental “recommend to Chuck Wendig” stack are, probably unsurprisingly, rather darker and more profane than the “recommend to anyone” shelf.) But I’ll try to balance the two. 🙂
A book you read in 2013 you’d recommend: Emperor Mollusk vs. the Sinister Brain, by A. Lee Martinez. All kinds of funny uses of old-school sci-fi tropes, held together by a main character with a thoroughly entertaining voice.
A comic book you dug in 2013: Oddly, I didn’t read that many comics. I did finally get around to reading Alan Moore’s From Hell, but I would say I admired that one more than I enjoyed it.
A TV show: I didn’t honestly watch that many TV shows this year, and of the ones I did, I’m not sure I’d recommend any of them…
A movie: Much to my surprise, Disney’s Frozen. A nice updating of the princess tropes with some killer music.
A game: Bioshock Infinite. Great design, great gameplay mechanics, a female character who (the game will actually tell you outright) can take care of herself and doesn’t need protecting, a heck of an ambitious story.
