*turns around dramatically in chair* OH, HELLO, I didn’t see you there. How’re ya now? Once again I return from the wasteland, emerging from the apocalyptic veldt, with an awkward fusillade of mini-blogs. Less a single boulder catapulted through your castle wall, and more a crate of pebbles dropped unceremoniously upon your head.
First things first, where’s Wendig? I’ve got a series of appearances lined up over the next week or two. I recorded with Slayerfest 98 over the weekend, joining a panel of rad humans to talk about the Season 6 finale of Buffy (“Grave”). Not sure when that lands, but I expect sometime this week. Then, tonight I’m at the Bethlehem Public Library reading from and talking about Wanderers. Tomorrow, I’m at Greenlight Books, talking to Ilze Hugo about apocalyptic fiction (her new novel is The Down Days, also about a pandemic). Finally, next Wednesday I’m chatting with Josh Malerman via the Doylestown Bookshop online. Very excited about all of these, and I hope to see you there.
Why yes, Virginia, Twitter is a Hell Realm. This past weekend was a fucking delight on Twitter, which is to say, apparently I became the poster boy for the publishers suing the Internet Archive due to the IA’s overreach on copyright. I’m guessing it’s because people just don’t like me, because, to reiterate one last time, I had nothing to do with the suit. I didn’t contact my publishers regarding it, I am not named in the suit, I do not control publishers with my mind, and I wasn’t even the only author talking about this thing on Twitter when it happened back in March. I appreciate people think I wield more persuasive power than, say, Neil Gaiman (with 2.8 million followers on Twitter), but I assure you, I do not. Regardless, people have since gone on to doxxing me, threatening me with death, and assorted other standard awfulness. As such, I locked my account and took a weekend off of Twitter and it was very nice, so you can expect that to continue. I’m not deleting the account or anything, but will be considerably more scarce there over the summer. I’d rather devote time and energy to writing this big damn SECRET BOOK I gotta write. I will continue to be here, of course, and you can also find me on The Gram, as it were.
We’ve been watching Letterkenny. That, at the behest of a number of friends (including but not limited to, Delilah Dawson, Kevin Hearne, Rob Schnell), and finally we relented because hey it’s on Hulu, and that’s a Texas-sized 10-4, Big Shooter. It’s a show where I only understand about 80% of what they even say (up from what I’d say was about 50% when we started), but god-dang it’s funny. Ferda!
Other things on the blinky box we have enjoyed? Well, if you’re not watching What We Do In The Shadows, something is wrong with your brain. The movie was amazing and I knew there was no way they could do a TV version that equaled it — and yet, here we are, because it is as good. We’re also watching a lot of cartoons. Craig of the Creek is one of the best toons on TV. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is back, and is the best.
Okay, I know, but bear with me. Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t awful. I know. I know. It looked terrible. He had creepy teeth at one point. It was a whole thing. But somehow, it was actually kinda… fun? Is that okay to admit? It’s not gonna win any awards, and at no point was I moved to tears by it, but it was an hour-and-a-half of mirth. And Jim Carrey plays a curiously sinister Robotnik — I expected him to just be silly, camera-mugging Carrey, but the character was genuinely kind of evil? As evil as you can be for a kid’s movie, I guess.
I’m getting bored with Animal Crossing. The samey-samey comfort of it is wonderful, but also started to feel… well, samey-samey. Rec a new game? Also, I’m starting to feel like my life would be improved if I got back into PC gaming? Would it? Am I wrong? Hm.
I went to a park yesterday. It’s pretty out-of-the-way, a bit wild, not a lot of “facilities,” so it’s mostly just… nature. Which is great, because, ennnh, nobody was there? Okay, a couple people, but all at a distance, and we had masks. Took some pictures, listened to the babbling of brooks and what-not. Ooh, I saw a pair of orioles and their nest. Photos forthcoming later! Soon as they’re processed.
ANYWAY HERE IS A PHOTO

I’ve found that following my favorite Tweeters (which includes you!) via FeedBin is a much saner way of using Twitter, unless, I suppose, one actually tweets a lot rather than just reading. (Not looking at you, here, Chuckaroonie). It lets me just subscribe to individual Twitterers, see posts in one place, mark them all read without reading if I want to, and click through to the post if I want to look at replies. No compulsive scrolling of the timeline, no promoted posts, much less cruft.

Duuuude I saw that shit on twitter and it’s ridiculous. It never even seemed like you were involved in the lawsuit. I was confused about all the vitriol. People like you though. I say that with confidence as a people myself. PC gaming is a good idea, that’s my go to get outta my head and this shit show that’s going on. Anyway, stay safe, take pictures and we’ll hold your spot at Twitter whenever you feel like coming back.

I loved it too. I burst into tears, cuz, idk, relief? Yeah, such a beautiful, simple, gorgeous, uncomplicated closeup shot of a being doing its thing was incredibly welcoming.

Pretty ridiculous that not only were you wrongly called out for that, but that there was a massive “but stealing is our goddamn right!” movement behind it. Shit-tastic on all counts.

A group of friends and I had a day reporting accounts related to your twitter death threats. The disinformation network is strong but suddenly they’re silenced the moment you unplug, which means their power is weak at best. Enjoy your book writing!

Sure! I’m rocking a Canon EOS 77D right now — macro is a 100mm macro (also Canon), lens is a Canon zoom 100-400mm.

I love the 100mm macro. Is it the f/2.8L? It’s my workhorse on the Canon side. I’m still using my original Canon 7D. (I hope this comment nests properly!)

Emily St. John Mandel tweeted last week that she was taking a break from twitter to write her next book, and she would see us in 2021. I am taking that as a cue myself. The pandemic brought me back to twitter, in part because of loneliness, in part boredom. And it has been terrible. I remembered why I left in the first place when a day was completely ruined because of anger and fighting and lies that I WASN’T EVEN INVOLVED IN. Then a tweet from someone I like that was utterly absurd came across, and I was done. I put it away, and decided it was time to be done with these things. I am sorry you became a target of the ridiculous. It may be our new version 15 minutes of fame.

I love Twitter a whole, whole lot — but at a certain level it just becomes a whole, whole lot of other stuff. I think it’s overall good, but it’s so easy to see bad information run laps around good information there — and abuse comes all too easily, too.

I have slightly dabbled into Pc gaming, but more for some curious indies. If you want a low-risk (potentially) high-reward I would recommend the bundles over at Fanatical (not the mystery ones). Ended up getting some fun games there like Toki and Airport Tycoon.

Heh! So if you’re watching Letterkenny you’ve been seeing my hometown and current place of residence, Sudbury, Ontario where they film. I actually haven’t given it much of a watch yet, and I don’t know why, but every now and then I check out an episode just to play “hey, I know that place!”

If you’re looking for still-relatively-chill gaming, Maybe give Northgard a look? It’s somewhere on the dial between Civilization and an RTS. Faster than civ, but not a frenetic clickfest like most RTSs (instances of the game usually last between 45 minutes to a couple hours, tops, and you can save whenever you want)
Campaign mode is fun, Conquest mode is fun, art style is great, vibe is great.

I’ve had a very similar issue with Animal Crossing, the “samey-samey”-ness of it is comforting at first, but then, you start to realize that there are “classes” of characters, who basically say the exact same thing, aside from a nickname they call you, and their own default catchphrase. Listen to the nickname and catchphrase enough, and eventually, they too will grow tired of it, and either give you a new nickanme/catchphrase, or allow you to pick a new one. But eventually, if you’re at all “quick” in the brain, you start to realize that every interaction is scripted from a limited pool of responses, and things start to repeat. Just like Westworld! Oh, have you watched Westworld (HBO) yet? That’s my recommendation. Regarding PC gaming, I do find myself wondering if you’d enjoy the Fallout series? Fallout 4 is my all-time favorite, but Fallout 3 and New Vegas are fun too. Oh, and the social media break thing…totally know how you feel. stepped away from Twitter last year, never returned. Stopped using Facebook and Instagram for the past couple of weeks, but it’s difficult to stay away from Facebook because there are so many brands that only respond there, and Instagram IS a fun place to share pictures, but it’s owned by Facebook so…meh. Anyway, always look forward to seeing your blog updates pop up in my email!

Seeing dumbasses on FB and Twitter right now is making my anxiety worse. I told my therapist that I’d spend less time online, and I need to do it. I have a novel to finish! Cats to cuddle! A garden to…garden. Quasi-related, but if you want a positive online experience, the gardening subreddit is one of the least toxic places I’ve ever seen.

I don’t blame you AT ALL for deciding to be scarce on Twitter. Trolls ruin everything, and I figured it was only a matter of time before you decided to just quit forever. Wil Wheaton and Becky Chambers come to mind… they left, and it really has weakened the experience. If you, Felicia Day, and Delilah Dawson left, it’d be a loss for sure, and I’d certainly would lose interest in Twitter.
Also, not sure if you like shooting games, but Cyberpunk 2077 releases soon. It’s a far cry from Animal Crossing, but should be good.

Thanks, again. Hang in there, Chuck. And get to writing. I need a new book from you to read! 🙂

I’m finding that if I click on a Twitter trending topic, there’s a ton of posts! But, then I click on the radio dial for posts from people I follow AND it all goes away. Amazing. I’ve always enjoyed the Lego franchise video games! I just bought Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 for the Switch and it’s a ton of fun. I like how they’re easy to play both on your own and as single-player. Plus they’re very silly so that makes them extra fun to play! It’s $9 on the Nintendo eShop right now!
I’ve also enjoyed Lego Harry Potter but I last played that on Wii so I have no idea if it’s released on Switch.

I’m gonna throw in my game recommendation, too. Child of Light is a thoughtful, brief RPG (about 10-12 hours) and gorgeous as hell with its watercolor aesthetics. Its themes of self-discovery and family really warmed me without overstaying their welcome. Plus, you can fly all the time.
