I get way too excited when I find a new bird.
Which is not to say I’m literally discovering new species of birds, by the way — though if I did, do not think I wouldn’t call it the GRUFFLED WENDIGO or maybe the EAST PENNSYLTUCKY BEARDBIRD. Whatever. No, I mean, when I find a bird that is explicitly new to me. In this case: a cedar waxwing.
I found a shitload of them nomming on the many, many berries in the understory of our forest.
I snapped some pics — those can be found at the bottom of the post. And no, they’re not macro photos, but by now we’ve surely learned I care little for your HUMAN RULES.
Not much news this week —
The Daily Beast did a thing about the lack of safety around comic freelancers, and, for Obvious Reasons, I get namechecked. So go and check that out, if you choose.
Also, The Columbian recommends Damn Fine Story as a good NaNoWriMo book.
And I think that’s it.
HERE HAVE SOME BIRBS

Beautiful pictures of a particularly favorite bird of mine. I remember the first time I saw them, munching on berries in long grass next to a pond. They are almost impossibly smooth of feather.

Interesting article on the Daily Beast. I’ve had a right wing drooler who has made numerous attempts to harass me for the past 14 years. The last time he tried, sending threats to my publisher, he ended up with a visit by two “men in black” from the FBI – at his place of employment! – who then explained to him the legal jeopardy of using the internet to harm a business (it’s actually a law – look it up). It’s now been 18 months of silence from him (and having to unfriend and block some FB “friends” who refused my suggestion they block him so he couldn’t read my posts through their timelines). If there’s a “next time” my publisher assures me they won’t have the FBI warn him. And he’s in no position to answer a federal lawsuit in a jurisdiction across the country from Tobacco Road, where he lives.
As regards marvel, it’s unsurprising the place is the way it is. Consider that the scumbag publisher who owns it is one of Trump’s best buddies down at Mar-A-Lardo – he’s one of the shitbirds who’s been fucking with the Veteran’s Administration. As they say, “the fish rots from the head.”
Keep on keeping on!

Love those tiny dark eye-masks the birds are wearing. They look like they’re planning some kind of tiny berry heist.

For reasons I don’t pretend to understand, we are more likely to see waxwings here in the spring than fall. Which means that the berries they prey upon are old and fermented and probably full of Edelfäule-related fungus, and that gives the spectacle of a bunch of sleek birds who are wobbly-drunk and surly. Beautiful to look at, but angling for a fight.

Really great shots, Chuck. I’m a major bird nerd and Cedar Waxwings are one of my favorites (white-throated sparrows too). I moved last year and one of the reasons I considered the house I chose was that the backyard backed to woods and I hoped hoped hoped I’d get waxwings! I haven’t seen any yet. 🙂 You got shots nice and low, I usually see them in the tops of trees and the light is off because they are back lit. They also flit about a lot, which you captured brilliantly! Bravo!

Hey! My favorite birb!
They also love eating from bushes with overripe berries at this time of year and then flying into your pristine Pennsiltuckie Windows. Aside from the fact that we, as humans, also do those things at this time of year (though maybe our alcohol intake isn’t from berries), I feel like it’s also important to admit our flaws and safeguard us against ourselves.
Be sure to dirty up your world-peepers or put up them window stickers for the holidays or somethin’. It’ll prevent very awkward and sad questions about why there be bird carcasses surrounding your house, laying at every window like a sign from Santa himself.
