That there is some snake skin.
I remember seeing my first snake when I was a kid — I was maybe six, wandering through the woods and fields behind my house, and my father was nearby but out of sight. I stumbled upon a rotten, hollowed-out stump, and sitting in the middle of that stump was a garter snake. I lost my shit. I fucking screamed like I had just seen someone get murdered. But I couldn’t move. I was paralyzed with fear. That, or TRANSFIXED BY OPHIDIAN HYPNOSIS. Either/or.
Regardless, by father came running, certain that I was about to be eaten by a Yeti or something, but turns out, nope, just a li’l ol’ garter snake. He picked it up and showed it to me and it was of course harmless, and I wasn’t scared of snakes anymore. My kid has none of that fear that I possessed — because the other day, when I lifted up a stone, I found this fancy fellow:
It’s a milk snake.
(insert “my milksnake scares all the boys from the yard” joke here)
Folks around here tend to confuse them for copperheads, but we don’t get many (or even any) copperheads in this part of Pennsyltucky. We do get snakes people think are copperheads, like milk snakes and water snakes, and then they flip out and behead them with shovels or dispatch them with rifles because people are unnaturally scared of snakes, even though snakes are amazing and do a lot of good pest control work that would cost you a lot of money if you asked a human being to do it. (Sneks don’t care about your capitalism, yo.)
Anyway, this little snakey-fella or snakey-lady was underneath the stone, and B-Dub was like, oooooh, and he wanted to get close and look at it. So we did, within reason, without spooking the thing too terribly much. I got off a pic and then gently replaced the rock.
Days later, we found its skin.
(Another snap:)
And B-Dub kept the skin in a jar that also contains about two dozen cicada skins and some dragonfly and butterfly wings, and if he were an adult it would look like the kind of thing a serial killer keeps, but it’s a pretty cool jar. You can rattle his creepy cicada jar and it makes a sound:
THE WHISPER-RASP OF DEAD FLESH.
WHAT PRECIOUS NECROMUSIC.
Point of the story is, what? I dunno. Don’t be scared of snakes, I guess, because SNEKS BE COOL.
Also, though, there is a transformative element to a snake shedding its skin, and that leads me into the next question, where I ask you about THIS VERY BLOG.
The blog numbers here are waaaaay down.
This is not an exaggeration when I say November of last year (cough cough election time) came and went, and after it, my views went over a cliff. My purely anecdotal feeling on this is that it has less to do with what I’m posting and more to do with what’s going on in the world. People, to my delight, seem to be reading more actual articles and fewer ding-dong bloggers (cough cough like me), and given that humans only have so much reading time in them in a given day, one suspects that some more casual reading (cough cough terribleminds) may have fallen sacrifice to that. Plus, sometimes I’ll post something I think is cool, and ten minutes later, it’s all BREAKING NEWS: EL PRESIDENTE SEEN HIDING IN VLADIMIR PUTIN’S UNDERWEAR DRAWER or BREAKING NEWS: REPUBLICANS GATHER TOGETHER IN SECRET SORCEROUS CEREMONY TO SACRIFICE THE LAST UNICORN IN ORDER TO DISMANTLE THE FINAL SACRED PROTECTIVE LOCKS OF OBAMACARE, THUS DOOMING THEIR CONSTITUENTS TO WORSE AND MORE EXPENSIVE HEALTH CARE. Or just BREAKING NEWS: SHIT’S ON FIRE AGAIN. Eyeballs naturally flit toward the news, which these days is effectively a stock ticker that doesn’t track stock prices, but rather the highs and lows of our collective social anxieties.
So, it leaves me feeling like — well, what the hell do I do?
Seems I have a handful of options, and I’m happy to hear your thoughts on these, so feel free to swing your way down into the comments and add your two pennies:
a) Fuck it, blog less, turn this into a mostly promotional vehicle.
b) Fuck it, blog the same as I do now, because ultimately I don’t blog for eyeballs but because I cannot contain the stupid thoughts that exist inside my head so I might as well purge them here — even though I kinda pay a bit of a premium to host this sucker.
c) Turn it to a Patreon-kinda-gig.
d) Change the blog material — less writery stuff, more othery stuff (recipes, rants, whatever).
e) SHUT IT ALL DOWN
f) I dunno, cat pictures or something, even though I don’t have a cat.
Admittedly, some of my reduced blog numbers are because subscriptions are strong — over 6k subscribing means those people don’t need to “hit” the blog everyday to see what’s here. And guest posts seem to be holding their numbers, which is nice. Still, I get the overall feeling that engagement here is lower, and that coincidentally happened right around November.
If you have thoughts, pop ’em below.
OKAY BYE
janeishly says:
Another B here. Personally, November was the time that I decided that social media was driving me insane, in that even people I share political beliefs with were posting stuff that made me fume, so I stopped using Facebook completely and have been much less likely to read any blog posts since then (partly because most of them made their way to me through my Facebook feed). I suspect the same is true of many other people.
But you are one of the few voices I do read on the madness, particularly on your side of the Atlantic (though as a Brit I’m quite proud of our own contributions to political lunacy, particularly the Queen’s recent EU hat… wtf?)
So yes, just keep on keeping on. Unless you don’t enjoy it any more, in which case stop and go and do more bee eating or whatever.

I admit I skim the Five Things articles unless it’s an author I already like or the book title interests me. I say do whatever makes you happy. I’d prefer you keep it as it is now, but, hey, you do you.

It is BECAUSE of the horrid things transpiring in our world right now that we ABSOLUTELY need distractions to keep us from wanting to freeze ourselves in carbonite. So, please, sir, continue with our regularly scheduled programming: guest blogs, writing advice, Flash Fiction Challenges, and, of course, the occasional ranting sessions. Our creative inclinations require sustenance and guidance, lest we are deprived and forced to embrace the Dark Side (which didn’t turn out so good for Anakin). Keep on doing the Lord’s work, brutha.

Don’t you dare leave. We need your Punchy McPuncherson writing, humor, and insight to help us believe we’re not all going to burst into flames or be drowned in Trumpoleum-gooshit. Now as to the content of your Blogendom, find a healthy (with a helping of ice cream and cats) balance of newsy shenanigans, and writing wisdoms, with an occasional opinion piece on the nature of our current state of pre-apocalypsia. Pretty much what you have now. Those who jumped ship just didn’t like your opinion, so to hell with them!

Please don’t stop writing this blog! It’s one of the only blogs I read consistently and I would be sad to see it go. I mostly read it for the writery stuff and the adorable stories about your son, but I love delving into your political posts from time to time as well. As a non-American I love having the opportunity to expose myself to opinions that often run counter to a lot of what reaches the news here.
I’ve been following your blog for years through the Feedly app. I only ever open your actual website when I need to link a blog post to someone else. Which happens from time to time, because you have a habit of spitting out little gems for us. I don’t usually comment either, because I am a greedy little leech who just wants all your words without giving anything back >:)
If you need to turn this into a patron-like situation to keep the site running, you do what you gotta do. But please don’t go away!

Please don’t stop the political posts. This country needs voices like yours.
I read all posts through email. I’ll make a new habit of clicking through just so you get my hit.
I’m certain I’m one of the hits you used to get but no longer get because I don’t often read comments anymore, and not just here, but anywhere. Not since last November.
I love the parenting stories too. This post was great. Love to see another child in the world being taught respect for other creatures. Gives me hope for the future. I’m a big fan.
Please don’t stop the writing posts either. I might not read them as closely as I did years ago, but I wouldn’t be the writer I am now without this blog, so thank you for that. Newer writers need you.

B, please! Blog about whatever you want, when you want, just please keep blogging… Do know that yours (ok, and occasionally Scalzi’s) are the only blogs I ever read out loud to my family… Your delightfully wise snark entertains both my fiance, and my teenager.
And for her in particular – – your words on politics have given both voice and heart over the last distressing months to my teenager, who as a black immigrant girl, has worried so fearfully about what our new administration means for her future. Your words were the one thing that made her stop crying that awful November day, that gave her some hope again, that the whole of white America wasn’t her enemy… I want to thank you for that.

I love your blog but I do often read it in my email browser. I try to hit like though, even if I don’t say anything, just so you know it’s been read.
HERE’S A THEORY: For what it’s worth, everyone I know who sells anything is telling me sales are down.
My theory is this: People are scared shitless, you have a complete nutter with his finger on the red button and we have Brexit and Theresa May making an alliance with some people who make the extremes of the Old Testament look quite liberal and open minded while the boat that is Britain sales towards a 300 ft waterfall humming merrily. It feels like the whole world is going down the toilet. Probably for most of us.
This is probably why my Australasian and Canadian sales are up and UK and US sales are down.
So yes, I think people are reading other stuff or probably spending more time hiding under the table gibbering with fear than they usually do.
CONCLUSION:
Please, please, please keep writing your blog. I absolutely love your articles, your outlook and your snark.
I choose B. B B B B B B B B!
Um … Please.

As noted above, by many before me, I also read your blog in email mostly. Rarely pop in to comment (generally I’m nodding my head as I read, thinking you’ve said it perfectly, so what’s to add? Plus I tend towards long responses no one will read, this one, evidence in hand).
Terribleminds is the only blog I read on a regular basis. Why? Because B. Fresh voice, fresh energy, fresh topics, fresh (and for me, reassuring) take on the world and on writing. Your voice and your ideas make me laugh, give me perspective, help me feel less alarmed with the world (I don’t mind the political posts because I think they matter). You do a great job creating content that isn’t smarmy, flashy promo nor shallow and superficial let’s-not-offend-anyone shill. Save me from the superficial and vacuous.
Numbers may be down for no other reason than the 2012-2016 glut of aspiring writers is falling away…writing, as you’ve noted time and time again, is work and persistence, difficult to master, and I’m guessing a lot of people simply don’t persist. Not a lot of money in this authoring business. And if someone has a college degree (or even if they don’t–LA garbage collectors make 80k)), chances are s/he’ll be better paid by someone else to use his/her mind to get things done within a 40-hour work week. Which reminds me of a friend who was approached to sell Amway years ago. The Amway person tried to hook her with the promise “You can make 50k a year working this business full time.” My friend snorted. “I already make 100k in my current job and it comes with benefits.”
Perhaps a lot of your blog followers who were secretly dreaming about becoming the next Stephen King have realized they are probably never going to be rich and famous as authors, so they have permanently or temporarily fallen away. But certainly others are sticking it out, thanks to your encouraging, practical voice. And new aspiring writers will come along, the next round to hear what you have to say, and some of those will stick it out and succeed because of the wisdom you generously share in your posts. I imagine you (and your blog) as a lighthouse, always standing firm, guiding writers past the treacherous coastline of false ideas about writing. I refer all my young aspiring writers (I teach high school English) to your blog.
Still, if the blog doesn’t fit your goals or life right now, let it go. Voltaire wisely tells us to cultivate our own gardens. One of my favorite poems is Arnold’s “Dover Beach” in which the narrating voice turns to his lover at the end and says:
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.
While the poem is pessimistic about the world, it isn’t pessimistic about love. It reminds us that those we love–our partners, our family, our good friends–are where we need to put our energy because the world is what it is, and love is the thing that saves us from the world’s indifference. Only continue the blog if you love it and if it gives you something back.

I’ll be iconoclastic (WHAT? NO, ME? WHO’D HAVE EVER GUESSED!) and pick B *and* C.
B, in the whole keep-as-it-is kinda thing (assuming of course, that’s what YOU want to do, which of course all of this is predicated upon).
– NOT ONLY BUT ALSO –
C, in that I think you *should* start a Patreon, dedicated entirely to professional-level writerly advice. Keep the kind of writer-advice stuff that you occasionally post here going… but for Patreon, do a different, dedicated deep-dive on the topic. Like heavy-duty getting-into-process-and-brass-tacks-of-business stuff. I think that even if you only did one such article a month, your subscription rate would be enough to knock a serious dent in the hosting costs here.
Think of the writer-thoughts articles that you post here as almost advertisement for the “graduate-level course” that is your Patreon, in a way.
My thought. Welcome to it.

I vote for B as I still love to read blogs with my morning tea.
I love the variety of your blog. I started reading for the writing advice, but stayed for everything. Your non-political writing and your pictures take me away from what’s going on in the world. And please keep the recipes, your strawberry lemonade is always a hit with company.
Your political thoughts are helpful to read, as I share the same sentiments and it helps to know I’m not alone. In fact, I’m now visiting your Twitter daily to read your thoughts and see the articles you’re sharing. I used to ignore Twitter and only read your blog, actually. That said, I still devour the long form politcal posts you share here.
So, I vote for B. But, if you started a Patreon as well, I’d join.

I’m gonna go for B, also. And, yeah, I read in email so not so much clicky from me. Which I should be more aware of since I get all sad when the clicky isn’t happening on my own blog. I like it all- the writer stuff, the recipes never fail to amuse and the ones I’ve made have been yum, and all the other stuff. I like the variety. So, yeah, keep on keepin’ on. I mean, if that’s what you want, of course.

The B option, please, and thank you. The only posts I don’t read are the flash fiction challenges. I already have enough challenges in life; I don’t need more, lol I like that you use your blog for more than just self-promotion. Your rants are an articulation of the frustrations that I have at times struggled to put into words, and the “5 Things” articles often provide an introduction to authors I wouldn’t have otherwise discovered.
My only insight into the drop in numbers would be that people probably come here for writing tips as opposed to political commentary. Whatever, I say let your voice be heard; exercise your freedom of speech while you’ve still got it.

BBBBBBBBB…Please keep doing what you’re doing! I always read your blog in my email, too, which maybe doesn’t hit your numbers, but I LOVE it. I really look forward to your posts (sorry that I rarely comment, I suck at that). I started reading you because I’m a writer, but I love anything you write about. I know it sometimes feels like “Who the hell is reading this? Anyone? What’s the point?” (My own mother doesn’t even read my blog.) And I know that it isn’t worth the cost of the blog if you don’t have readers, but you DO have readers, and I’m not just speaking for myself when I say that your writing about writing offers a lot of value. I heard about you through several other writers.
Also, just a thought (but I could be completely full of BS), it’s summer time and people are frolicking through national parks and wishing they were dead in lines at Disneyworld, and probably just not online as much right now. When fall comes around and we all go back to our indoor lives and start rebuilding our indoor/winter bodies, we’ll be on the interwebs as much as ever before.

The B option, if you don’t mind. I can’t tell you how many posts you’ve written recently (especially about writing) that have resonated so hard and were so needed for me personally. As a fellow blogger (granted, on a much, much smaller scale), I totally get looking at numbers and being like, “Shit, is it even worth it?”, but your blog is honestly one of my favorites. My writing group and I share links from here on a weekly basis, because it’s inspiring and raw and honest and fucking hilarious. Sure, your numbers might have gone down and not every post will resonate with as many people as you want them to, but with every post, there’s a chance to reach at least one person. As a person you’ve helped, inspired, challenged and comforted on numerous occasions, I selfishly ask that you continue writing what you want and need, as often as you want and need to. I, personally, need them and am very grateful for them.
Thank you.

For me, here in the small country of the Netherlands, your blogs about what’s going on in America provides me with a clear understanding of the whole (shitty) status of things. It’s nice to hear a person’s view on things, next to social media and too-factual news media.
Apart from that, your blog posts often make me smile and laugh like crazy. And your writing advice and challenges keeps me writing, even when life sucks me into its tentacles.
Please don’t stop, I would miss it too much and I’ll probably become a bad writer again!

Go back to focus on writing, and writerly stuff. That’s why I started coming to your blog in the first place. I can get my fill of political rants pretty much everywhere on the interwebs. This used to be a safe space to get away from that shit.
It’s also why I swore off social media this year. If you were tracking my hits on FB, Twitter, etc. they fell off a cliff after the election too — I was just tired of all the SHIT.

Although I never participate in earnest, I come every Friday to check out your flash fiction challenges. I appreciate your work, and I hope you continue if you enjoy it.
Regardless, thanks for all the content.
