That there is some snake skin.
I remember seeing my first snake when I was a kid — I was maybe six, wandering through the woods and fields behind my house, and my father was nearby but out of sight. I stumbled upon a rotten, hollowed-out stump, and sitting in the middle of that stump was a garter snake. I lost my shit. I fucking screamed like I had just seen someone get murdered. But I couldn’t move. I was paralyzed with fear. That, or TRANSFIXED BY OPHIDIAN HYPNOSIS. Either/or.
Regardless, by father came running, certain that I was about to be eaten by a Yeti or something, but turns out, nope, just a li’l ol’ garter snake. He picked it up and showed it to me and it was of course harmless, and I wasn’t scared of snakes anymore. My kid has none of that fear that I possessed — because the other day, when I lifted up a stone, I found this fancy fellow:
It’s a milk snake.
(insert “my milksnake scares all the boys from the yard” joke here)
Folks around here tend to confuse them for copperheads, but we don’t get many (or even any) copperheads in this part of Pennsyltucky. We do get snakes people think are copperheads, like milk snakes and water snakes, and then they flip out and behead them with shovels or dispatch them with rifles because people are unnaturally scared of snakes, even though snakes are amazing and do a lot of good pest control work that would cost you a lot of money if you asked a human being to do it. (Sneks don’t care about your capitalism, yo.)
Anyway, this little snakey-fella or snakey-lady was underneath the stone, and B-Dub was like, oooooh, and he wanted to get close and look at it. So we did, within reason, without spooking the thing too terribly much. I got off a pic and then gently replaced the rock.
Days later, we found its skin.
(Another snap:)
And B-Dub kept the skin in a jar that also contains about two dozen cicada skins and some dragonfly and butterfly wings, and if he were an adult it would look like the kind of thing a serial killer keeps, but it’s a pretty cool jar. You can rattle his creepy cicada jar and it makes a sound:
THE WHISPER-RASP OF DEAD FLESH.
WHAT PRECIOUS NECROMUSIC.
Point of the story is, what? I dunno. Don’t be scared of snakes, I guess, because SNEKS BE COOL.
Also, though, there is a transformative element to a snake shedding its skin, and that leads me into the next question, where I ask you about THIS VERY BLOG.
The blog numbers here are waaaaay down.
This is not an exaggeration when I say November of last year (cough cough election time) came and went, and after it, my views went over a cliff. My purely anecdotal feeling on this is that it has less to do with what I’m posting and more to do with what’s going on in the world. People, to my delight, seem to be reading more actual articles and fewer ding-dong bloggers (cough cough like me), and given that humans only have so much reading time in them in a given day, one suspects that some more casual reading (cough cough terribleminds) may have fallen sacrifice to that. Plus, sometimes I’ll post something I think is cool, and ten minutes later, it’s all BREAKING NEWS: EL PRESIDENTE SEEN HIDING IN VLADIMIR PUTIN’S UNDERWEAR DRAWER or BREAKING NEWS: REPUBLICANS GATHER TOGETHER IN SECRET SORCEROUS CEREMONY TO SACRIFICE THE LAST UNICORN IN ORDER TO DISMANTLE THE FINAL SACRED PROTECTIVE LOCKS OF OBAMACARE, THUS DOOMING THEIR CONSTITUENTS TO WORSE AND MORE EXPENSIVE HEALTH CARE. Or just BREAKING NEWS: SHIT’S ON FIRE AGAIN. Eyeballs naturally flit toward the news, which these days is effectively a stock ticker that doesn’t track stock prices, but rather the highs and lows of our collective social anxieties.
So, it leaves me feeling like — well, what the hell do I do?
Seems I have a handful of options, and I’m happy to hear your thoughts on these, so feel free to swing your way down into the comments and add your two pennies:
a) Fuck it, blog less, turn this into a mostly promotional vehicle.
b) Fuck it, blog the same as I do now, because ultimately I don’t blog for eyeballs but because I cannot contain the stupid thoughts that exist inside my head so I might as well purge them here — even though I kinda pay a bit of a premium to host this sucker.
c) Turn it to a Patreon-kinda-gig.
d) Change the blog material — less writery stuff, more othery stuff (recipes, rants, whatever).
e) SHUT IT ALL DOWN
f) I dunno, cat pictures or something, even though I don’t have a cat.
Admittedly, some of my reduced blog numbers are because subscriptions are strong — over 6k subscribing means those people don’t need to “hit” the blog everyday to see what’s here. And guest posts seem to be holding their numbers, which is nice. Still, I get the overall feeling that engagement here is lower, and that coincidentally happened right around November.
If you have thoughts, pop ’em below.
OKAY BYE

Imma gonna put my 2c in and say I’d love for you to keep doin’ what you’re doin’. Like a lot of folks here, I read mostly through email and so don’t always click through. I don’t often comment (unless it’s a direct question like this) because, well, by the time I’m replying, everyone else has probably already said it, so…
Your words really bring laughs through, especially when we need it most. I’d hate to lose that. I totally understand it can cost more and I’d be willing to donate. I don’t know that I could afford to subscribe to a Patreon but if I had to, I would, to keep getting your funny posts.

I’m one of the guilty who hasn’t been reading as much. To be honest, I get so many blogs in my email, I bulk delete whatever isn’t work related. Although I do give yours a look before hitting the death button. I say keep it up, unless it sucks for you. I like the writing challenges, even though I don’t always participate and the editing ones… those can save lives Chuck. Please don’t stop those. BTW, I loved the macro drops blog from last Monday too. My vote is for B.

Well, I read that whole article in my email (because SUBSCRIPTION) but decided to pop on over to leave a comment to let you know YES THE FORCE–SUBSCRIPTION–IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE. PRAISE: I “found” you when I somehow ended up buying and acquiring all you “500 ways…. etc. and thought the advice some of the best I’ve read (and I read a lot of it – way too much). But mostly, loved your writing style, so promptly subscribed. I read most of the articles in email (see comments below on comments). Favorite writing advice by YOU and love the photos.
POLITICS: I am often tempted to click unsubscribe (I subscribe to too many already). I got a bit tired of the political tirades, and while I don’t disagree, my method of keeping up on politics is watching an hour of Fox and an hour of CNN, and so forth. I sometimes force myself through your political posts , but, again, because I enjoy your crazy mind. (posts like this one are the reason I keep from clicking the unsubscribe button).
COMMENTS: I used to click to the online article for the comments since they are SOMETIMES quite witty, but the reason I don’t any more is because you reply to the comments so seldom. And as I’ve been saying – I read your blog for YOUR writing. Most of the blogs I participate in have at least some little reply comment (as your guests usually do).
I don’t think I am your target audience, so my comment here is probably worthless.- but you did ask.
June 26, 2017 — 10:21 AM
terribleminds says:
One assumes that if you continue to find something useful here, you’re probably my target audience. (Maybe not for books, I can’t speak to your reading habits there.)
The politics stuff, ideally, is skippable — and I’ve toned that down, anyway. Not because I’m less political, but because I tend to just jam that shit right onto Twitter and not here.
As for comments — I don’t tend to reply because, for the most part, they don’t require my replies. (Most replies would be OKAY or THANK YOU and not much deeper than that.) Further, I’m sadly a little busy these days. I could just shut off comments, of course, which I suppose is an option there.

Hi, Chuck. I read your blog via my email most of the time. However, yours is one of the few blogs I actually do regularly read, particularly your own stuff, when it happens. (I tend to save the guest blogs for later.) I would rather not see this blog become a strictly promotional tool. The wide variety of things you post here is part of its appeal, I think. Also, who wants to read a purely promotional vehicle? (Isn’t that your own advice from a while back? 😉 )
The blog is great as it is, although I recognize the need for more statistical engagement. Do you think things would change if your subscribers (of whom I am one) got just a teaser in the email and then clicked through? Have you done that before? (I haven’t been here since the beginning, so I don’t know whether you’ve already tried that.)
I guess I would vote for option B, although truth be told, I would probably try to support it (depending on cost) even if you turned it into option C.
Out of curiosity, which types of posts are getting the most hits? Maybe more recipes would be good; yours are hilarious. (That’s actually how I first discovered your blog.) Those long lists are good. I like the flash fiction challenges, even if I don’t always use them. Sometimes I direct my CW students toward them.

P.S. — I appreciate the political rants because they give voice to how I’m feeling. That said, I really value your writing advice the most. It’s super awesome, and it led to my buying one of your books about the craft of writing. I like everything on the blog, but maybe if it there were more non-political things, the whole thing would be even better. (Note I’m talking about ratios here. I didn’t say to post less about politics.) And in other news, I’m going to just stop now on the giving advice part, since I’m far from an expert on blogging, as any glance at my own blog stats will suggest. 😉 )

I don’t want terribleminds to become a mostly promotional vehicle, and you give some bomb writing advice (I originally came here for the writing advice, but I also enjoy other posts). The Patreon idea sounds cool. 🙂
Also, have you considered ads on this blog? Idk if this is how it works, but maybe we can do an optional ad thing where ppl who choose to support you that way can.

As a fellow PA resident, small snakes don’t bug me. I even saw a fairly large garter snake last summer in the shade, chilling out and keeping cool and I left the poor guy be. Do whatever you want to-that’s what you tell us. I don’t like Twitter with all the politics, but I follow it anyway and try not to give out my opinions. As a writer, somewhere I received the advice to remain neutral so I don’t piss off would be readers. I have very few readers but still working on two items at the moment, publishing via e book places, trying to tag correctly.
I had to quit many blogs, else that’s all I’d do. Seriously, I’m trying to just stop social media and put it to like the weekend or so. I’ve had my tips for writing, now I just need to fill some more pages without spidders.
Maybe post on Fridays after we have written all week and then we can read and have a laugh or two, then answer some comments.
Good luck … to me and you.

What I enjoy here is you being you and you doing you, and you doing it not for the approval of others but for the approval from yourself. This in some way sets the example of honesty and decency and we lack this so very much these days.
Lots of love and hugs from the UK,

I read your words on every day that ends in a Y. But I can tell you one way to keep me from reading is to post pictures of SNAKES – without a warning. I have a real phobia about snakes. See I am from the Bible thumping south where they do all sorts of weird things with snakes, some you may have read about and some I’m gonna bet you that you can not imagine – or would not want to. You were kind enough to warn people about spiders the other day – well please respect those of us who have things about freaking, disgusting, awful, no need in the world (in my opinion) snakes.
I don’t live in the South anymore because I got tired of being my daddy’s and my uncle’s (all 9 of them) punch. I’m a survivor and they’re all being eaten by worms now, through no fault of mine. All but one of them were Ministers – So. Baptist ministers which in and of itself is a certain kind of hell if you’re a girl child in the family.
I share your blog with my friends because I think its well-written, intelligent, funny and the only blog I read every day. Wait, back up – I don’t usually read the guests, and I don’t read the stuff about how to write because I am not talented enough to string two or more words together and have them make enough sense for anyone to want to pay to read .
I do write as part of my survival tools, but with no intent of publishing, really who wants to read about another abused child/woman? Its been done and a lot better than I could do it.
I really love what you have to say about how screwed we are politically. Your angst matches mine in that how, why, who passed the rose glasses when these people were voting????
I want to scream but have no one to scream at, and you give voice to that.
Keep it up man, if your numbers are down, remember this: its summertime. People are at the beach, hiking in the mountains, outside having fun, at a water park, and everyone who is selling anything is seeing a lull at this time. I’m hearing it from everyone I know – even people who are giving things away.
They’ll be back and you’ll be there waiting with your pics, your snark, and your wisdom.
I vote that you don’t change a thing – except freaking warn people when you’re going to post certain things. PLEASE.

I really enjoy your writing, and I would hate to see less of it. I subscribe via Feedly, so I probably don’t count in your page views. Once I discovered your blog I actually started reading your fiction as well (REALLY enjoyed Invasive and Zeroes), so you gained a paying customer through this here blog. Your political views definitely come down strongly on a certain side of the fence, but that doesn’t mean your rants aren’t well written, and even though I don’t always agree with you, there is value in hearing that perspective from someone who takes the time to articulate their viewpoints thoughtfully (with a side of BEES!).
I suspect your instinct may be correct with regards to where the audience is right now. I’m in the marketing world, and many of us are seeing similar stats. Oddly, people’s behavior is very similar to what it would be in wartime. In other words, there is a BIG THING sucking up all of people’s discretionary attention calories. We are all getting bombarded with increasingly shrill and and urgent messaging as content providers and the mass media try to make themselves heard through the noise, and those discretionary attention calories are getting burned at an incredible clip.
In short, I’d love to find a way for you to stick around! I love getting all your content in my feed reader, but I would totally click through a “read more” button if I had to. Keep on keepin’ on, man.

As for politics, I think one of the biggest problems we have as a culture currently is the absolute refusal people have when it comes to discussing things when someone doesn’t agree with their stance. Be it politics, religion of anti-vaccinations (Don’t get me started on that last one) So another platform to hear & share opinion I’m always open to. Even two Democrats or Liberals or Republicans will never 100% agree. And we need to be open & willing to discuss our views or we’ll end up with an insane dictator running our lives.
….oh wait…

For me, it’d be a big loss to not have the delightfully odd mix of writerly advice, macro mondays, or tales of B-dub. So… keep doing what you’re doing, dude. I dig it.

Yeah, I vote B as well – because, well, why wouldn’t I? You just keep working to give us stuff and you keep paying the bill… C’mon already – quit bitchin’ and write another laugh-out-loud list about writing (sneakily hiding some real advice in with the “all advice is BS” schtick).
But, if you have to start charging – well count me in for a small donation (hey, I love you and all but I don’t want to feed your bee eating habit).
p.s. yeah, i rarely visit the blog – I mostly just read it via my email. Still engaged though – I promise. I even bought some of your stuff. Honest!

OK, so as a fellow blogger who lives her bloggerly life in the WordPress blogiverse… you need to make the email newsletter (via subscriber) a teaser only. I do NOT ever mind clicking on a link to read an article I may be interested in. Like others have pointed out, I usually read everything via the email and then unless its a question such as this one, I don’t click through. I’m thinking you will get a much better picture of your “readers” if they clicked through to read.
Another thing may be the whole its-summertime-and-there’s-icecream-by-the-pool syndrome. Seriously, I’m going to pick the Breyer’s Vanilla Bean drenched in hot fudge every time 😀 Blog numbers and sales usually wane when people can walk outside in shorts and a bikini top.
I’m voting for B with a dash of D. Although it is true that many people are exhausted from the whole crazy clowns in the White House trying to play grown-ups, and some of those people will abstain from anything that discusses said clowns, most need rants like yours to put things in a very snarky perspective for us. I like your writerly stuff, but its really the political rants that get me to laugh out loud and also appreciate the fact that I realize I’m not the only one thinking the things you rant about.
Keep doing what you’re doing… PLEASE!!!

I’m new here, I found your blog/writing about four weeks ago. I now religiously read your emails (but don’t always click through because the whole f*cking thing is right there.) I look forward to them. I read most of this snek story aloud to my son with some alteration. F bombs hurt his brain.
That being said, I used to have a webcomic, and in 2007 I won a blogging award and I made moolah on advertising and life was grand, but then Facebook happened and their social things that distracted with their blinkiness and I watched as my career/livelihood/fan base/creative endeavor/audience slipped away. It was a supersuckingshitstorm of a time.
so I have no advice. Except blogging keeps you relevant. And as long as you can do it and keep it within the <20% of your life, maybe it won't matter if your numbers flail because of political winds. Maybe gaining one new fan occasionally is enough.
Maybe. I love your writing on writing. Your NSFW. Your Macros. Your writing challenges. So there you go.

I read your blog for the stuff on writing. Mostly in the e-mails that I receive as a subscriber. Don’t suppose that counts as a “hit,” does it? No offense, but I ignore the political stuff, although I mostly agree with you about what’s been happening, because I already know that shit and I do what I can to keep the world smiling and safe. If I’m voting for a choice, I’d say, just keep doing what you do, because 6,000 subscribers is about 5,998 more than I’ve gotten, so from my point of view, you’re doing okay.

Your blog makes my week happier, no matter what you’re writing about. I save your posts in email to read (or re-read) when I’m having a bad day and need a lift. Your writing posts are helpful, the personal posts are often inspiring, and the political posts make the shit-circus that is our current government a little bit easier to think about (the alternative being to spend the next three years with my fingers in my ears, screaming LALALALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU).
I also save your “What I learned from writing…” posts so that when I have book-spending money, I know where to find the good stuff.
So I vote for you to continue the blog, whether you do it for free or via Patreon. Unless you’re tired of it, in which case, I respect that, and I’ll miss hearing from you a lot, but I’ll remind myself that you went to a good place, a ranch where there’s lots of grass and sunshine and other writers for you to play with when you’re not making new books for me to read.

I’m yet another subscriber who reads your blog posts in my email, and only clicks over if I want to comment or share on social media. I read almost everything you post, but my eyeballs register only ~10% of the time.
As a data point: the 10% of posts I *do* comment on/share are almost all writerly posts. So, contrary to (d), my humble request would be *more* posts about writing, less posts about “other things,” particularly politics. Not because I disagree with your views, but because I’m super burnt out on politics right now and am trying to lessen my exposure to non-essential political news as part of my mental illness self-care. I’ve cut out several other blogs I regularly read for this exact reason, and I know I’m not the only one doing this. A lot of us are just trying to write through the bullshit right now, even when it feels like writing is a small, selfish thing to do in the midst of civil unrest. I don’t like to casually use phrases like “safe spaces” (b/c they’re a vital, important concept), but a safe space to talk about writing and NOT politics, or the latest interest controversy, or the Alt-Right Employee of the Week would be awesome and something I bet plenty of folks would be interested in. I totally understand if that’s not your bag, though.
So…fuck it, do what you want, it’s your blog. I don’t pay you to blog; you owe me nothing. (Though if you wanted to do a Patreon, I’d support you. I’m deadass broke right now so I couldn’t afford more than a couple of dollars a month, but it’d be worth it.) If you enjoy how you run your blog now, then I would say just keep on keeping on.

Also, while we’re all airing our opinions re: your blog – have you considered adding tags to your posts? (Can you even do that in WordPress?) I ask because there have been times when I wanted to be able to browse all you writing posts, without scrolling through everything else, and there’s really no way to do that now. I know there’s a search function, but it’s not very efficient or user friendly if you’re trying to look for a genre of posts, versus a particular post (for some reason, searching for “writing” or a writer’s blog isn’t very useful). Just a thought.
