This one is pretty easy.
Pick one of the classic seven deadly sins:
1. Lust
2. Gluttony
3. Greed
4. Sloth
5. Wrath
6. Envy
7. Pride
And then write 1000 words of story based around that sin. In some way — how you interpret that is, obviously, up to you. Any genre will do.
You can choose to randomize it, too, using random.org to pick a random number between 1 and 7, and that’ll give you a random sin.
Post your story at your online space.
Link back here in the comments so we can all read it.
Due by March 11th, Friday, noon EST.
GO FORTH AND SIN, MY CHILDREN.

This sounds fun. But how to not channel “Seven” in this writing challenge? That will be tough. Flick still gives me the willies after seeing multiple times.

Sophie Giroir says:
Question: Are we sticking to the modern definitions of these or can we explore the wider range of their meanings? For instance, gluttony is usually considered over-eating or drinking excessively, but in the past it referred to the over-indulgence of anything.

Hello everyone! I’ve 1 question: first sin – Lust, I know it as Vanity / Lechery, meaning not just sexual lust but uncontrolled desire for money, fame, or power. Are those meanings, also a part of the exercise? Many thanks!
March 4, 2016 — 2:26 PM
Mr Urban Spaceman says:
I can’t speak for Chuck, but I think his answer would probably be along the lines of “Sure, go crazy!” Though personally I would put “Vanity” more as “Pride” rather than “Lust.”
March 4, 2016 — 4:36 PM
thesexiestwriter says:
Once again, dammit, I’ve written something that’s slimy and evil. I don’t know why but when I participate in one of Chuck’s flash fiction challenges, I always write a scene straight out of one of Satan’s wet dreams. If anything at all triggers you do not read this one.
As a side note, I have been experimenting with short sentences and sentence fragments based on Chuck’s post last week on the topic. I made an effort to keep sentences short-to the point of being abrupt. Just an experiment, but if you are interested….

*thumbs up*
Loving dem short sentences.
March 4, 2016 — 4:43 PM

The short sentences work well, creating a scene shot by shot. Very cinematic. I enjoyed the detailed planning of the murder. Really illustrated the anger. How they thought it through

This story starts with a guy being tortured and it basically continues the whole story. So, if that sounds upsetting, I’d suggest a skip. I did something a little weird with this, aside from the torture, I like how it turned out.

Woo! You’ve never fistbumped me before!!! Thank you!
Oh! Great! Technology can be a real bitch can’t it? I’m so happy you enjoyed my take on the Seven Deadly Sins… and did you like it that I put the title in Latin? 😛
March 5, 2016 — 7:32 PM
dcxli says:
Nice take. I like how how showed the sins in their full debauchery, and how their natural feeding ground is a frat house.
March 5, 2016 — 1:20 PM
Mozette says:
Hey…. where else would they feed? Except at Wall Street and in the election grounds – but the latter is every 4 years. 😛
March 5, 2016 — 7:18 PM
Catastrophe Jones says:
I always love your concepts, Mozzie!
March 10, 2016 — 10:24 AM
Mozette says:
Aaawww… thanks. Actually got the idea from the time I went to the UK and found out that some of the oldest universities/colleges were in that part of the world…. around Greece, Italia and the UK and Scotland.
So, played on that.
Also, knew that London has had 4 names since it was a tiny little fishing village on the River Thames – in 4 different dialects. 😀 Londiniom being just one of them – in old Latin – and that was one of the first. 😀

Mr Urban Spaceman says:
Dammit, I forgot to add to my review, that you might want to consider italicising monologue/thoughts, to help differentiate it from narrative. It was a bit jarring to be reading “he this” and “he that” and then come across a couple of instances of “I…” Needed a bit of double-take reading to realise what that was about.
March 5, 2016 — 11:45 AM
dcxli says:

March 5, 2016 — 11:04 AM
Catastrophe Jones says:
Okay, so — this is fucking awesome.
The way the narrator thinks of himself, the stilted language, the absolute depression and misery that combine with Sloth here… the imagery and the innerspeak that you’ve got are amazing.
Your use of specific language for evocation of imagery and mood is fantastic!
Frankly, I want to read a hell of a lot more about this one. Like I could handle a whole series about how it happened and what happens next.
The sense of loss that pervades this piece, and the way that wee putti king tries to inspire is just fucking PRECIOUS.
You did damn good! I love this!
March 10, 2016 — 10:58 AM
boundbeautifunk says:
Thanks so much! The character is a non-POV character from my current WIP, though this short would take place years later. Laconic as fuck, even to me, so it’s nice to have the opportunity to try to be in that head, which doesn’t handle a gender binary, but doesn’t have the language to express it. Not using self-referential pronouns is FUCKING HARD, though I think that’s why the innerspeak worked so well.
Thanks again!

Reminds me of Fight Club, haha. “I am Jack’s festering rage.”
I like the concept as a whole, and the checklist paints Jack superbly as a puling, grasping, ungrateful, miserable asshole, but I don’t like the phrase ‘like a woman at the mall’.

Well I’ve just allowed Chuck to pop my flash fiction Friday cherry and wouldn’t you know it it was all because I was overcome with lust 😉 It had to happen, I suppose, as I kept on peeking in here, showing a little bit of interest, until I just couldn’t hold back any longer …then again who can resist the Wendig for ever? 😀

Ouch. I love the arguments couples can have, turning talks about *NOTHING* into pure hyperbolic H-bomb, ice-coated fury. Wonder what Debra will do now?

I actually wrote another scene with what she does next, but it seemed so mundane (and was over word count) so I cut it!
