It’s that time again for the challenge I love so much —
You take two pre-existing pop culture properties, randomly mash them up, and then write a piece of fiction inspired by and utilizing that mash-up. You’re not writing fan-fiction in those worlds — you’re capturing the essence of them for a new story. (So it’s like, when you pitch an original novel to an editor and you say, IT’S LIKE DANCES WITH WOLVES MEETS BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. And they’re like, what? And then you both laugh uncomfortably.)
Here, we’re gonna do a horror-flavored edition
One table is PURE HORROR.
The second table is not at all horror.
You will mix these up for maximum awesome.
Roll a d20 or use a random number generator once on each table.
Then, write a story — we’ll say up to 3000 – 5000 words in length — and post it at your blog and give us a link back here so we can all read it and go ooh and ahh.
(I know, technically not a flash fiction challenge. DON’T SASS ME.)
Given that this challenge is a bit longer, we’ll make it two weeks for your timeframe, which will finish this out right on October 30th, the day before HALLOWEEN.
*crash of thunder*
*cackling ravens*
*Jack-o-Lantern smokes a cigarette and leers at you*
Go forth and write.

I just have to say that I think it’s awesome that three of your horror options, and one of your non-horror options, are Stephen King. ♡

A good twist on Dr Who that somehow makes sense. He has a dark side. I don’t think it would take much to push him over the edge…

Actually, seeing we were coming up to ‘Back to the Future’ day, I threw in Doc Emmett Brown as the mad scientist in Frankenstein … just to make things interesting. 😛
Where The Doctor was, I don’t know… 🙁
October 24, 2015 — 7:37 PM
Y. C. Harrison says:
Whoops – I think my brain read the words, “Amy” and “blue box” and automatically went into Dr Who mode and from there presumed Emmett was another time lord (like the Master). I’ll have another read later on from a ‘Back to the Future’ perspective… 🙂 Sorry about that.
October 24, 2015 — 8:33 PM
Mozette says:
Oh, no… you got the Dr Who perspective right… 😀
But I thought to throw in Doc Emmett Brown just because ‘Back to the Future Day’ was coming up – and gave him a twisted way of thinking instead of how he was in the movies. 😉

Interesting concept – I like the idea of these few misfiring neurons in the massive hive mind, still doing their own thing, however subtly. I did feel as if the distance of the narration made it a little hard to connect with the story. And I would have really liked to see a little more about how this narrator is communicating with us, or how they’re subverting the Unity’s will!
October 26, 2015 — 4:00 PM

Yeah, that was something I was concerned about, the distance. It feels more like a brief to a story rather than a story itself. Thanks for commenting : )

Poor Scooby… I mean, Rudy. It’s probably wrong that I was kind of pleased with the fate of the ‘Scooby Gang’. Probably shows that I wasn’t a fan of the show, ha ha. Great job – liked the lines about the effects of extreme guilt on the soul.
October 23, 2015 — 9:23 PM
StarNinja says:
Woof! That got heavy pretty quick. I rolled Babadook too. I liked the direction you took it. Setup was nice and creepy and your choice of narrator very creative. It had all the elements of a Young Adult Mystery novel but that ending… man oh man. Great work, Ashlee! Two thumbs up!
October 26, 2015 — 11:16 AM
Ashlee says:
Thanks for reading & giving your opinion, folks – I really appreciate it!
October 26, 2015 — 2:58 PM
Aimee Ogden says:
Yikes! That was heavy. I liked the ending you set up, but I felt like the story was a little out of balance, with too much time spent in set-up in the classroom/interviewing the dad (whose motivations in telling/not telling the story were a little foggy to me). I also liked the choice of narrator, except that it seemed to come out of nowhere; if there was a reference to the dog beforehand, I missed it. (And how did Rudy know all the details of their classroom conversation?)
There were a few other odd points — the tone switch from Rudy’s very formal narration to the kids’ tone is abrupt, and I also found the dialogue hard to read sometimes because of how scriptlike it was (“Blah,” said X. “Womp womp,” said Y. “Blerp,” said Z). And the teenage characters all sounded so much alike, too. But it’s a nice idea! And I do really like the combination of such a dark concept with a teen murder mystery.
October 26, 2015 — 4:22 PM
Ashlee says:
Thanks for the feedback! I guess I had all the “said X” “said Y” because I was differentiating the speaker & because I’ve read many people dislike anything OTHER than a simple “said…”. I’ll figure out a better way to do that. Thanks again!
October 28, 2015 — 5:19 PM
Laura Wilson-Anderson says:
That was good. Didn’t expect the narrator. 🙂
October 28, 2015 — 12:02 AM
Ashlee says:
Thanks Laura! I’m trying to play around with the “unexpected”. I appreciate that you gave it a read!
October 28, 2015 — 5:21 PM
Laura Wilson-Anderson says:
For what it’s worth, I didn’t have a problem with the dialogue. If you don’t put the “he said she said” tags, people can get lost and not be certain who is talking, especially with more than two characters. If you do, people can complain about all the tags. It’s hard to find actions to use for every sentence of dialogue! I suppose a teen girl could snap her gum or flip her hair every time she finishes speaking, but… LOL. And sometimes you just want the dialogue to roll. :::shrug:::

Granted this is supposed to be horror, and I was supposed to make this scary. But, as Scotty would say, “I’m sorry Captain, I just can’t do it! I got Babadook as well. Loved your take on this mash-up. Having only heard circumstantially about House of Cards, I was still all in with this tale of Parental (Mis)guidance. I couldn’t help but imagine a young Kevin Spacey with his trademark drawl going about his business. Awesome work, Adam!
October 26, 2015 — 3:23 PM
Y. C. Harrison says:
I really like it when I read a story and then I realize the ‘hero’ is actually a guy who more than deserves what he’s got coming to him. In the case of this story it’s kind of a toss up who is more awful, ‘Dad’ or his son who seems happy to take the ‘advice’. Great job.
October 28, 2015 — 1:28 AM
Laura Wilson-Anderson says:
I don’t know The Babadook (though several people used it and I have an idea of it now – need to google it) and have only seen one episode of House of Cards, but this was a great story. I don’t know why I keep reading horror in the middle of the night, though… lol.
