The holidays are swiftly coming up.
A lot of you are writers. Writers with books out. Novels, comics, collections. Hell, we can even expand this to indie games, or Kickstarters, or whatever you want, long as it’s you writing it and it’s something that tells a story.
So, here’s your chance to promote that thing in the comments below.
Tell us about it! Tell us why we should check it out! Get excited.
(And don’t forget to give us a link to click. By the way, giving us links to click may hold your comment in administration for a short time. Do not panic! I’ll administer throughout the day.)
But, this promotion thing: it has rules.
First: keep it short. Like, one paragraph short. And not one of those paragraphs with the size and density of a brick. Keep it lean and mean — back cover copy. A hook in our mouth to drag us forth.
Second: you must also promote another book (or comic, or KS, or game, or whatever) by someone else. So, one of yours, one of someone else’s. Failure to do this may open you to a surly side-eye, straight-up mockery, or a trip right to the spam oubliette.
Comment section is open.
GET THE TO THE PROMO CANNONS.

Thanks for propping up the soapbox for us, Chuck!
I’ve got a digital-debut out called LOUDER THAN LOVE. Reclusive heavy metal rocker meets widowed librarian in a chuckle-worthy case of mistaken identity. It’s a very different kind of rock and roll love story.
“Using tattoos as a timeline, Adrian unfurls his life for Kat. But as the courtship intensifies, it’s unclear whose past looms larger: the widow’s or the rocker’s. Will their demons ever rest, or will they break these soul mates apart?”
http://www.amazon.com/Louder-Than-Love-ebook/dp/B00AR49H2Q
I’d also love to talk up and recommend MAKING FACES by Amy Harmon. It’s “the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl’s love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior’s love for an unremarkable girl.”

Okay, one for me. The five-star rated e-short, “Late Bloomer,” where the hero was once an accountant, now he’s a master zombie-killer. Life in the post apocalypse is good…too good in this story. http://www.amazon.com/Late-Bloomer-Christopher-Robin-Negelein-ebook/dp/B00L4LLJ36
And one for Dawning Star, a SF RPG that had a successful Kickstarter. A game about humanity’s accidental colonization of an intergalactic ruin.

Great idea!
You like/hate snow? This book, SHARDFALL (The Shardheld Saga trilogy, #1), starts with lots of it:
Muus is only a thrall, a slave without rights, but he knows the small, blue shard he picked up belongs to him alone. His commonsense saves their lives from cold and starvation.
Kjelle, heir to the Lord of a rich mininghold, is spoiled, and covetous of his thrall’s tantalizing find. His greed causes an avalanche that leaves both young men marooned on an icy mountain slope.
Birthe, young wisewoman and huntress, mother of baby boy Búi, is brave and clever. She knows her way through the snowy wilderness of the Norden and her songs are filled with magic.
Now they are bound together on a danger-laden journey to a lost and burning land, where Muus needs to connect the skyshard to the Kalmanir, the standing stone that is the world’s fount of all magic.
The Kalmanir’s time is almost up and it urgently needs to be replenished before the magic of Gods and men runs out.
The two young men have to learn to trust each other, for all around them, enemies abound. Rebels threaten both the kingdom and Kjelle’s holding, and a tribe of mad idolaters is trying to recall the banned primordial Old Gods.
Even more imminent is Muus’ danger, for it comes from nearby, from the shard itself.

For the second book it’s all about a dragon. A female dragon! It’s BOUND IN DARKNESS (Lilith trilogy, #1), by my Dutch colleague Kim ten Tusscher:
Lilith, a young and rare dragon changer, was stolen by the uncompromising prophet Kasimirh when she was a baby. The prophet aims to convert the world to the faith of Jacob and does not shy from bloody war to achieve his goal. Kasimirh uses Lilith as a tool of mass destruction to terrorise his enemies into submission. When Lilith, after years of indoctrination, begins to apprehend the scale and gruesomeness of the acts she commited in the name of Jacob, she decides to flee. But Kasimirh does not allow her to end the twisted relationship between master and servant so easily… WHO CAN YOU TRUST, IF YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE WEAPON? In the first book in the Lilith trilogy, ‘Bound in Darkness’, the fugitive Lilith is captured and put to work in the palace of the king of Merzia. Her relatively peaceful days are over when Ferhdessar, the court magician and advisor to the king, realises who and what she really is. He intends to use Lilith as a weapon against her former master, his archrival Kasimirh, who is about to attack and invade Merzia with his army. But can the cold, aloof Ferhdessar be trusted?

My latest book, Lady Raven, is a steampunk fantasy about a girl stripped of her high society status following the death of her father. With her mother accused of treason, and her ex-fiance sent to track her down, she goes on the run, only to realise that if she wants to be saved, she’s going to have to save herself, whatever the cost.

I write Wart – The Comic (www.wartcomic.com) an ongoing, long-form webcomic about monsters, cults and rats set in an insane asylum (when it isn’t dimension hopping). Inspired by HP Lovecraft and gothic horror, but not taking itself too seriously…
And, to mention someone else’s work…
Merrick – The Sensational Elephant Man. (http://www.merrickcomic.co.uk/the-comic)
Based on a fictional version of the life of Joseph Merrick, it steps between historical facts and turn of the century folklore juxtaposed with the American superhero comic conventions of super powers, masks, secret identities and fantastic adventures.

Alright, a very pre-emptive Happy Reading Holiday to everyone! I strongly suggest (all but demand) you pick up my first novel, The Outrider Legion, for some holiday break enjoyment. It’s a fast fantasy adventure read about a unit of special forces soldiers tasked with tracking down a stolen magical artifact. Monsters, wizards, assassins, and traitors all try to stop them in order to claim the cargo for themselves. The Outriders fight off attacks from one of of the Dominon to the other, protecting not only their country, but each other.
Also, The Outrider Legion will be going on sale for the holidays starting at the end of November, just in time for the sequel to be released. So if you jump in now, you won’t have much of a wait to continue the story. Yeah!

Now, if you like what I’ve written, then you’ll love Mark Lawrence’s “Broken Empire” trilogy. It’s dark, dark fantasy in every sense of the word. But it is also a compelling tale about a broken husk of a boy rising up to take what is his in the harsh world he lives in. Jorg Ancrath may be one of the most brutal “heroes” I’ve followed lately, but I loved every minute of his adventure.

My debut, THE D’EVIL DIARIES, is coming out from Hachette shortly. It’s a funny adventure story for kids… set in Hell 😀 Jinx is hopeless at being evil. Which is a bit of a problem when you’re Lucifer’s youngest son. But when he runs away from Pandemonium, the walled city he’s lived in all his life, he bumps into dead girl Tommy – who’s been sent to Hell for accidentally feeding her nasty uncle to a circus lion – and unearths a conspiracy that could up-end the entire underworld… https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21939665-the-d-evil-diaries

Debut YA fantasy, The Last Gatekeeper, is out November 28th.
Zan knows she’s different. Today she discovers why…
Zanzibar MacKenzie knows she’s a freak. She has EHS – electrical hypersensitivity – which leaves her trying to live a Stone Age life in the twenty-first century: no internet, no phone, no point really.
Then Thanriel knocks on her door and the dull summer holiday becomes maybe too exciting. Zan discovers fairies and angels are real beings from other planets, she herself is half alien, and the future of life on Earth rests on her shoulders.

Adam Christopher (@ghostfinder) says:
I love this plan! I’m excited to be a part of it! Let’s do it.
My latest novel from Tor is called THE BURNING DARK, and is a scary bit of haunted space opera about a forgotten war hero, toxic starlight, and the last transmission of a lost cosmonaut bouncing around dimensions it shouldn’t. I quite proud of this book – Booklist gave it a starred review, and said “This dark and chilling novel from the versatile Adam Christopher builds tension expertly. Claustrophobic in mood but with the scope of great space opera, this is SF you will want to read with the light on.”
http://www.amazon.com/Burning-Dark-Spider-War/dp/0765335085/
But what I really want to talk about it one of my favourite novels: VICIOUS by VE Schwab, also out from Tor. This is a superhero fantasy the likes of which you will not have read, trust me. It’s about Victor and Eli, two college roommates who, in their senior year research, manage to unlock extraordinary abilities and begin a long and twisted journey that leads to a very dark place indeed. Publisher’s Weekly gave it a starred review, and named it one of their best fantasy books of 2013. So, yes, you need this book, like now.

I wrote a children’s story that I think some people might enjoy:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IKEMP0Q <– When two small boys from the village of Cheddar set out to defeat the fire-breathing dragon Balderdash, they make new friends, see wonderful sights, and find out that when it comes to dragons, not everything is as it appears.
And also, Sarah Rees Brennan recently completed the Lynburn Legacy trilogy, which is a truly amazing series that not enough people are flailing over in my humble opinion. Basically it's a story about identity, and family, and love, and there are awesome ladies loving ladies, and ladies loving gentlemen, and also it will probably make you cry. There are also imaginary friends who turn out to be not as imaginary as they appear, and magic. First release from Number Thirteen Press: Of Blondes and Bullets by Michael Young.
No good deed goes unpunished!
When he pulled the blonde from the icy waters, Henry wasn’t thinking about what would happen next. But when she disappears again he’s going to have a hard time explaining the truth to the men who want to find her. And if he is to protect his family, it’s time for Henry to make some hard choices.
With a touch of David Goodis’s everyman-noir, a dash of Brit Grit, and a whole lot of hardboiled, Of Blondes and Bullets shows just how easy it to pull the veil from the world you thought you knew.
“Edgy and disconcerting… It’s good, old-fashioned noir presented in a fresh way.” -Nigel Bird (Smoke)
http://www.numberthirteenpress.com/1-of-blondes-and-bullets.html
As for someone else’s:
Paul Brazil’s crime-caper novella Guns of Brixton, previously epublished but currently unavailable, is out soon in paperback from Caffeine Nights. Based on a short story that pretty much defines Brit Grit, it is utterly essential reading for fans of hardboiled and noir. Classic pulp crime fiction with a dash of British grime, dark humour and wit, all with the style and panache of one of the best writers around the interwebs.
With dead dwarves, gun-toting priests, transvestite robbers and so much more that you wouldn’t even believe me if I told you.

Arran Swinn knows a thing or two about nightmares. After all, they killed his father. When the sun goes down, the Siheldi come out, and surviving the onslaught until daybreak can be little more than a gamble without the right protection. Thanks to a little luck and an heirloom from his father, guiding seagoing merchants along the haunted trade routes is easy money…right up until he takes on a secretive passenger who proves to be almost as bad as the Siheldi themselves.
With the daylight fading and the ocean rising, Arran finds himself saddled with an illegal cargo, a bargain for his soul that he can’t hope to keep, and the unwelcome scrutiny of Megrithe Prinsthorpe, a tenacious trade inspector intent on seeing him hang for his misdeeds.
After uncovering a plot that could replace the Siheldi with something much worse, Arran must decide just how much he’s willing to sacrifice to the spirits that have had him marked out since the night his father’s death changed his life forever.

BURIED AGENDAS – Diana Reid is an investigative reporter skilled at uncovering other people’s secrets. It’s her own secret that she’ll go to great lengths to keep buried—a secret that drove her to leave her fiancé and hometown of Diamond, Texas eight years ago. All that’s about to change when she receives a letter stating people are dying, and implicating her hometown’s largest employer. Secrets unfold, and Lucas discovers the answers he seeks. Is it too late for Lucas and Callie, or will their love find its way?

ABANDONED tells three tales of people lost and trying to find their way. The journey from here to there isn’t ever as straight and obvious as it seems.
TO BUILD A HELICOPTER recounts the story of a man whose girlfriend unceremoniously dumps him at a party due to his lack of ambition. He’ll seek solace in two piles: one of LEGO pieces, and the other, Bolivian marching powder. He’ll use them both to build something to prove his worth.
THE MEANINGS OF WORDS is a story of a man peeping through the glass window of a hair salon, longing for the beautiful stylist inside. He knows all of her curves, her smile, everything about her. He’s got a message for her, but doesn’t know if he can find the courage to say it.
SHOTS AND STRIPPERS examines one fateful night in the life of a party kid. What starts out as a little get-together turns violent when drinks and dancers swirl into chaos. He’ll try to keep his composure and control of the situation as sanity abandons everyone in the house.

S*X FOR THE TERRIBLY SHY
James Clarke claims that magazine editors fail to realise how their sex articles badly shock many, like himself, who were brought up during the last century.
He points out it is no good sexologists writing about how to find your partner’s G-spot when most people out there can’t even find a decent parking spot.
He presents a step-by-step guide on how to find a partner; how to gain their trust; how to take their hand in a darkened theatre; how to find the right words at the right time; how to behave when it comes to deciding whether it’s to be “Your place or mine” and how to get lucky.
It’s all here. The author just hopes his advice is not too late for you.

Here’s one book that will count as both ‘mine’ (in that Ghostwoods Books are publishing it) and someone else’s, in that it was written by Marion Grace Woolley. It’s called Those Rosy Hours at Mazandaran. It’s not due out until February, but it’s up on NetGalley now if you’re on there. Or we’re giving away a bunch of ebooks on LibraryThing on November 24th. It’s the best book we’ve ever published, and may be the best book we will ever publish. A quote from a blurb writer:
“Rising from the cracks and hints in Gaston Leroux’s classic, Those Rosy Hours delivers a striking and glorious original historical fantasy that sings across time from the heart of a lost empire.”

I write a series of fun-London-crime novels called Hobson & Choi – the first one has been out for a few months, the second comes in January.
Imagine a grizzled middle-aged detective with a dark past, accompanied by a bemused teenage intern who keeps trying to explain the internet to him. Because she thinks they should be investigating modern, relevant cases, dammit. Even though the claws of Hobson’s old life in offline crime keep ripping into them. Think Sherlock meets Hellblazer meets a grim YA novel.

For my pass-it-on promotion: Deadlines by Chris Brosnahan is a weekly serialised thriller, in which a young journalist tries to investigate the murder of a colleague and quickly gets in deep with some bad people. Old school investigative journalism and some big cliffhangers. It’s also being released in a weekly serial format by an interesting new publisher called Pigeonhole, which only makes the suspense worse.

Thank you, Chuck–you actually helped more than you know with this one!
My third novel was just released last month–and as luck would have it, the ending of the book is the result of one of Chuck’s weekly writing challenges. It fit like a puzzle piece into the novel as I was getting close to the end. It’s called Whiskey and Rue, and is based on the story of a woman I learned about while visiting the Arizona Historical Museum:
A woman in search of a new beginning arrives in Tombstone, Arizona, as tensions mount between factions. She’s quickly swept up in the rowdiness of the boomtown, surrounded by other lost souls, outlaws, and people seeking their fortune. In her quest to establish an independent life, she makes desperate choices, and ultimately her actions shock the residents of Tombstone in the aftermath of the infamous gunfight at OK Corral. http://www.amazon.com/Whiskey-Rue-Christine-Frost-ebook/dp/B00NZD7U8Y/

Sometimes trust is the toughest lesson to learn.
Sophie Shaw is days away from signing a contract that will fulfill her dream of owning a vineyard. For her, it’s a chance to restart her life and put past tragedies to rest. But Duncan Jamieson’s counter offer blows hers out to sea.
Duncan still finds Sophie as appealing as he had during boyhood vacations to the lake. Older and wiser now, he has his own reasons for wanting the land. His offer, however, hinges on a zoning change approval.
Bribery rumors threaten the deal and make Sophie wary of Duncan, yet she cannot deny his appeal. When her journalistic research uncovers a Jamieson family secret, trust becomes the hardest lesson for them both.

Thanks for this opportunity, Chuck, but I’m going to be different and turn the assignment on its head, promoting lots of other authors first by mentioning my Author promotion blog, Reading Recommendations. http://readingrecommendations.wordpress.com/ I’ve been writing this blog for a year now and have promoted 168 Authors so far – many new-to-me, some longtime friends, others very established and accomplished authors, self-and-traditionally published, and writing in just about any genre and for every age group and interest. Heck, I’ve even promoted a new book written by a musical rock star from the 60s! There’s a book on my blog for everyone who loves to read. (And I’m pleased to see that one author I have promoted has also posted a link to her new book in your comments section!)
As for my own publication, I wrote a short story that is being published as part of a new collection written by Tim Baker http://www.blindoggbooks.com/ starring his own fictional character, Ike. “Path of a Bullet” will be released on Dec. 1st, both as an eBook and in print. The reason I became involved is because Tim Baker was the second author I promoted on Reading Recommendations, I love his writing and have read all his novels – a couple as a beta-reader, including all the stories in this collection. So when Tim asked his friends to contribute, I wrote a fan-fiction piece about Ike that takes the character to my own novels’ setting of Bequia in the Caribbean. Several other Reading Recommendations authors are involved in this project, as story contributors and in writing the introduction and blurb for the book, You can read more about the book here http://islandeditions.wordpress.com/2014/11/11/path-of-a-bullet-put-some-ike-under-your-tree-this-christmas/. Ask for shameless self-promotion and ye shall receive. For those of you who are looking for something in the mystery/fantasy/humor/noir genre (yes, of course that’s a thing), you should check out my latest novel RED HOT STEELE (http://bit.ly/rhsamebook):
“Detective Jake Daggers likes his murder investigations the way he likes his women—straightforward, easy, and with a killer body. So when his older-than-dust partner throws his back out on a goblin raid, his captain assigns him a new running mate—a sexy young half-elf by the name of Shay Steele. It seems like a match made in Daggers’ imagination, but Steele’s no pushover. She’s a powerful forensic psychic, and she’s got sass oozing out of her boots. In a debut case teeming with fire mages, foundries, and a dead guy who’s crispier than bacon, it’s pretty clear Daggers isn’t the only one getting a heaping helping of RED HOT STEELE.”
And if you like my novel, you’d be remiss not to check out Glen Cook’s Garrett P.I. Series, starting with Sweet Silver Blues (http://amzn.to/1H9aJO0). The grimy little man snuck into his room to punish Geoff and his cousin Vince for their bad behavior. Geoff survived, forever scarred by the encounter and the loss of cousin Vince. His memory of the event faded over the years and now he isn’t really sure what happened that night, but when his own son, Justin, finds his way onto The Whipfather’s list, the memories come rushing back. Now, face to face with The Whipfather again, Geoff learns the horrifying secret behind the sadistic creature and his relationship to Santa Claus. Christmas will never be the same.

A great book for noir fans is Jake Hinkson’s ‘The Posthumous Man’–When Elliot Stilling killed himself, he thought his troubles were over. Then the ER doctors revived him. It’s infatuation at first sight when he meets his nurse, Felicia Vogan, a strange young woman with a weakness for sad sacks and losers. After she helps Elliot escape from the hospital, she takes him back to her place. He’s happy to go with her, even when she leads him straight to a gang planning a million dollar heist. Does Felicia just want Elliot to protect her from the outfit’s psychotic leader, Stan the Man? Or is Elliot being set up to take the hard fall? One thing’s for sure: if he’s going to survive this long night of deceit and murder, Elliot will have to finally face himself and his own dark past.
