With some books, I know the exact moment the story seed arrived. With Wake of Vultures<\/a>, it was trail riding on my horse and watching a vulture circle overhead while an obnoxious donkey tried to hump my boot. With Bloom<\/a>, my latest cottagecore Horror novella, it was my teen daughter asking me why all the hot serial killers are dudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with It Will Only Hurt for a Moment, I\u2026 do not remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which is also a big part of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It Will Only Hurt for a Moment<\/strong>, which we will call IWOHFAM from here on out to avoid wrecking the internet with too many words, is about Sarah Carpenter, a woman in her mid-twenties who\u2019s waking up from an unhappy life in thrall to a narcissistic ex-boyfriend. As narcissists tend to do, he insidiously shut down all avenues of escape and joy, which means Sarah, once a pottery major, has completely given up on her art. But now she\u2019s won a scholarship to the Tranquil Falls artist retreat in the north Georgia mountains and can\u2019t wait to commune with her fellow creators and rediscover herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, she discovers something dark. Something dangerous. Something that\u2019s been waiting in the cellar of the once-resplendent resort overlooking the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Sarah\u2019s strange, half-forgotten dreams are true, there\u2019s a reason the other artists are going slowly crazy. The fiber artist is knitting an endless scarf. The calligrapher\u2019s teeth are stained black. The musician can\u2019t stop playing this one maddening carousel song. And then people start getting hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even worse, there\u2019s something Sarah can\u2019t quite remember, something horrible that was done to her. Something that also happened to me. You can read about it in the Author\u2019s Note when IWOHFAM is on shelves, but until then, I promise you the same thing I promised you in The Violence<\/strong>: in this book, the people responsible will get what they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
