Three of us, plus our designated Booth Minion, were piled into a car, on our way to perform at a fandom convention in Virginia. We\u2019d hit the point in the journey where fatigue had set in and the conversation had stopped flowing. Our driver, Saber, grew restless as the passengers became increasingly absorbed in their phones.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was one of those passengers, idly scrolling through some online news, when I stopped and said, \u201cWhat the FUCK.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d Saber asked, eager for a distraction from the tedium of I-95.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just found an article on… Christian swingers?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWHAT.\u201d (Saber was raised a conservative Christian and now teaches sexual education at an adult toy store.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome Christians are using swinging as an… evangelism tool, apparently.\u201d (<\/span>See for youself.<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow would that even work? That is the WORST pillowtalk ever,\u201d Saber said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other passengers, Flint and Maggie, snapped out of their phone hypnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Wow, that sex was amazing, but you know what\u2019s better? JESUS,\u2019\u201d somebody chimed in. We started giggling. And then we started riffing on other terrible things to say after sex. We looped in our fourth band member, Rouge (who was stuck at work), via the group chat, and began tossing ideas back and forth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike, \u2018Oh, baby, I can\u2019t wait for my <\/span>wife <\/span><\/i>to meet you!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Have I got a timeshare deal for YOU.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Mmmm, won\u2019t you back my Kickstarter, sweet thang?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Now, get comfortable as I set up my <\/span>PowerPoint projector<\/span><\/i>\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The laughter built, and before five minutes had gone by, Saber said, \u201cOK, OK, I am <\/span>writing this song<\/span><\/i> when I get home.\u201d And that song, \u201cPillowtalk,\u201d is on our soon-to-be-released third album. Our best song ideas seem to come from random, goofy banter. I was hanging out with my boyfriend and getting ready to volunteer at the library one day. As I gathered my purse and coat, the conversation became a very silly flirting sesh in which we kept trying to one-up each other with terrible, library-themed sex puns. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy pleasure\u2019s feeling <\/span>overdue\u2026<\/span><\/i>\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy bits are <\/span>Dewey\u2026<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s make the graphic novel section even <\/span>more<\/span><\/i> graphic\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A few months later, the lyrics and music for \u201cBibliophilia\u201d were finalized.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of our lyrics is even the result of a Mad Lib we were doing in the car during an exhausting 11-hour drive home from a convention in Massachusetts. After filling in an adjective and a body part (plural), the phrase \u201csandpapery balls\u201d was coined, cringed at, and eventually worked into our \u201cPump Shanty\u201d parody, which is all about the importance of using lubricant.<\/span><\/p>\n

A lot of our songs would not exist if it weren\u2019t for us paying attention to silly conversational tangents; and writing down potential song fodder, even if it\u2019s half-baked, can be a lifesaver during periods of writer\u2019s block. (Side note: I recently blanked on the term \u201cwriter\u2019s block\u201d and said \u201ccreativity oubliette\u201d instead, which I actually like <\/span>much <\/span><\/i>better. Feel free to steal that if you want.)<\/span><\/p>\n

People writing stories and songs can find inspiration from the strangest of places – the key is to practice being open to it. When something strikes an emotional chord with you – that funny thing you saw on the subway, the nonsensical word combination stuck in your head for no reason, <\/span>the Creamed Corn Incident<\/span><\/i> – jot it down. You never know when it\u2019ll come in handy.<\/span><\/p>\n
