I call the one on the right: IGNORANCE IS BLISS.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, hi!<\/p>\n<p>Not much to add here this week, except I&#8217;m going to info-dump a bunch of\u00a0<em>horror stuff<\/em> into your\u00a0<em>faceholes<\/em> &#8212; right now, as I type this, we await the first domino to fall in MUELLER TIME (spoiler: turns out, it was Manafort and\u00a0<em>not<\/em> Hillary Clinton, gosh, who knew), but I thought we&#8217;d stare at something else, something more primal, something more HALLOWEENIE.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my top ten horror movies.<\/p>\n<p>I think.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, this list changes moment-to-moment, but it&#8217;s what I plastered on Twitter the other day, and it&#8217;s what I&#8217;m gonna stick to here and now:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1. JAWS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2. THE THING (John Carpenter) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3. THE SHINING <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>4. IT (2017) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>5. DEVIL&#8217;S BACKBONE <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>6. GET OUT <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>7. HELLRAISER 2 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>8. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (original)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>9. THE EXORCIST <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>10. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an imperfect list, because it misses some great flicks: the original <strong>Hellraiser<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>The Descent<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>The Orphanage<\/strong>, or or or.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s the nature of lists.<\/p>\n<p>Here, too, are some of my favorite horror novels, though these are in no such list, of preference, because it&#8217;s honestly too damn hard &#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Swan Song<\/strong>, Robert McCammon (seriously, I re-read this massive epic horror novel once every 3-5 years &#8212; it&#8217;s harrowing and beautiful, also just read anything he&#8217;s written)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Three<\/strong>, Sarah Lotz<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Shining Girls,\u00a0<\/strong>Lauren Beukes<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Misery<\/strong>, Stephen King<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Lost Souls<\/strong>, Poppy Brite (though bonus points for the most wonderfully vile novel I&#8217;ve ever read,\u00a0<strong>Exquisite Corpse<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>NOS4A2<\/strong>, Joe Hill<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>My Soul To Keep<\/strong>, Tananarive Due<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Exorcist<\/strong>, William Peter Blatty<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Rosemary&#8217;s Baby<\/strong>, Ira Levin<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Head Full of Ghosts<\/strong>, Paul Tremblay<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Hammers on Bone<\/strong>, Cassandra Khaw<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Last Days of Jack Sparks<\/strong>, Jason Arnopp<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Watchers,\u00a0<\/strong>Dean Koontz<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Drive-In,\u00a0<\/strong>Joe Lansdale (read everything Joe Lansdale, tho)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Jurassic Park<\/strong>, Michael Crichton (shut up, is too a horror novel)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Monster Island<\/strong>, David Wellington<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s just like, the teeniest sampling.<\/p>\n<p>Curious to hear yours, both movies and books.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I&#8217;ll do the\u00a0<em>shameless self-promo shuffle<\/em>, because ultimately I think what I write &#8212; despite their labels &#8212; ends up being horror as much as not.<\/p>\n<p>If you want some scary business, get you to these two books:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blackbirds<\/strong> (young woman can see how you&#8217;re going to die by touching you; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781481448659\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>print<\/strong><\/span><\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2yY49vw\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ebook<\/strong><\/span><\/a>) or\u00a0<strong>Invasive<\/strong> (futurist consultant to the FBI learns about a killer who is using genetically-modified skin-cutting ants as his weapon; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780062471628\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>print<\/strong><\/span><\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2ydW8Wd\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>ebook<\/strong><\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>And as a reminder, today and tomorrow are the last days to get the MEGA ULTRA WHOADANG BUNDLE for $10 &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/payhip.com\/b\/qUjO\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>use NANOCTOBER as the coupon code<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and get eight writing books and two novels.
