{"id":27517,"date":"2015-08-19T18:24:15","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T22:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/?p=27517"},"modified":"2015-08-19T18:24:15","modified_gmt":"2015-08-19T22:24:15","slug":"a-bit-late-but-reddit-ama-and-other-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/2015\/08\/19\/a-bit-late-but-reddit-ama-and-other-news\/","title":{"rendered":"A Bit Late, But&#8230; Reddit AMA And Other News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, I&#8217;m presently doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything!) over at Reddit Books.<\/p>\n<p>Go, ask stuff.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll try to answer it.<\/p>\n<p>Easy-peasy, nacho-cheesey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/books\/comments\/3hkm8h\/ahoy_im_chuck_wendig_author_of_zer0es_ask_me\/?sort=new\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Go ask me stuff<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And then hey, since I got you in the mood to\u00a0<em>click things<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/08\/19\/432582315\/zer0es-takes-the-cyber-thriller-to-an-electrifying-extreme\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>NPR reviews\u00a0ZER0ES:<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As his five hackers clash with each other, both personally and ideologically, at The Lodge, their growing awareness of the dark forces lurking behind the walls of the government \u2014 and of reality \u2014 kicks the suspense into high gear. Wendig is an ace at pacing, and he hurtles the reader through hacking sequences and action scenes with equal bang. It&#8217;s not an easy task to make a sitting-and-typing session feel nail-bitingly tense, but\u00a0<em>Zer0es<\/em>&#8216; high-octane blend of nervy characters, dark humor and bristling dialogue carry the day. Even when he gets his geek on, his well-researched, efficiently-deployed technobabble never threatens to overwhelm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2015\/08\/18\/chuck-wendigs-zeroes-a-hack.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>And so does BoingBoing<\/strong><\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Chuck Wendig&#8217;s new technothriller\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0062351559\/downandoutint-20\">Zeroes<\/a>\u00a0is a hacker misfit tale in the lineage of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0792838467\/downandoutint-20\">War Games<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0783226004\/downandoutint-20\">Sneakers<\/a>, true to the spirit (and often, the minutae) of security work, and exciting as hell to boot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/theater-arts\/zeroes-snarky-characters-ruin-creepy-sci-fi-tale-article-1.2329583?utm_content=bufferd4cf2&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=NYDNBooks+Twitter\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>And so does the NY Daily News<\/strong><\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fans of recent Crichton and recent King will eat this bogus story up. And fans of early 2000s jargon will treasure it. The rest of us? Bored until the tale&#8217;s last 80 pages&#8230;. In &#8220;Zeroes,&#8221; Chuck Wendig upholds his reputation for irreverent, garbled language, but he fails to captivate his audience until the long-spun-yarn&#8217;s fruition. Literature&#8217;s underground shock jock relies too heavily on tween language, and not enough on nail-biting story structure. Instead, we&#8217;re left with a handful of Gilmore Girls whose snappy sarcasm and sappy stereotypes distract from an otherwise enticing sci-fi story.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wait, maybe don&#8217;t read that one. (And did he just ding me by comparing me to Stephen King and Gilmore Girls? Aren&#8217;t both of those things awesome? And what &#8216;recent Crichton&#8217; is he talking about? Michael Crichton is no longer a living author. Is he writing novels from beyond?) (Also, am I really &#8220;literature&#8217;s underground shock jock?&#8221;) (I&#8217;m very confused?)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sffworld.com\/2015\/08\/zer0es-by-chuck-wendig\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>SFFWorld reviewed it<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, too:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve read only a fraction of Chuck\u2019s prodigious output so I had some expectations \u2013 well drawn characters, great plotting, with a solid through line of sinister throughout. On those counts, I was not disappointed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ecmyers.net\/2015\/08\/zer0es\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>And so did bad-ass authorperson E.C. Myers<\/strong><\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From the very first page, it\u2019s evident that Wendig is either secretly a world-class hacker in his own right, or he\u2019s done so much\u00a0research that he has become\u00a0not only\u00a0comfortable, but fluent in the technical and paranoia-fueled online world that hackers inhabit. Either way, he\u2019s definitely on the NSA\u2019s watchlist\u00a0\u2014 but this book\u00a0should be on their reading list as well, as\u00a0<em>Zer0es<\/em>\u00a0is an entertaining and timely addition to the subgenre.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I also wrote a blog for Bookish: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookish.com\/articles\/chuck-wendig-hacking-is-actually-kind-of-boring\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hacking Is Actually Kind Of Boring<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s more I&#8217;m missing but I&#8217;m a bit dazed and dizzy from travel and book launches and all that good stuff.
