Because without social media, I wouldn&#8217;t know so many amazing writers. I would have never spoken on stage at Margaret Atwood&#8217;s birthday. I would never get into a cold war of kale-related tweets with John Scalzi. I would never have gotten <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lartist.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Lar deSouza<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to draw me on a wyvern with a jetpack:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B9v1Aq3IQAEOptO.jpg:large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B9v1Aq3IQAEOptO.jpg:large\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"478\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or me on the\u00a0<strong>Jaws<\/strong>\u00a0boat with Scott Lynch, Sam Sykes, and the aforementioned Scalzi:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/whatever.scalzi.com\/2015\/02\/26\/were-gonna-need-a-bigger-boat\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/B-vzLo6W8AAoTja.jpg:large\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I sometimes just wish for things on Twitter, and they happen. I say,\u00a0<em>that book looks neat<\/em>, and then that book, which is months before publication, shows up at my door.<\/p>\n<p>I know. This is supremely privileged. Not everybody can just shake Twitter and make cool stuff fall out, I do recognize this &#8212; but I&#8217;ve also seen it happen with so many others, too, whether it&#8217;s writers asking for critiques or when fans of authors get to meet and engage with those authors.<\/p>\n<p>Social media can be really, really cool.<\/p>\n<p>Which leads me to:<\/p>\n<p>Project: Redacted.<\/p>\n<p>On September 4th, 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckWendig\/status\/507677975064887296\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>I wrote this tweet<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On September 4th, 2015, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.com\/book\/7846\/aftermath-star-wars-by-chuck-wendig\/ebook\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>this book comes out<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which means that\u00a0<strong>[REDACTED]<\/strong> has been revealed as\u00a0<em>not<\/em> the\u00a0<strong>PERFECT STRANGERS\u00a0<\/strong>officially-sanctioned novelization that I&#8217;ve been talking about on Twitter (though one day I will write\u00a0<strong>BALKI&#8217;S DAY OF BLOOD<\/strong>, you betcha), but rather revealed as:<\/p>\n<p><strong>STAR WARS: AFTERMATH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>*silent joyful screaming*<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.starwars.com\/news\/what-happened-after-endor-find-out-in-star-wars-aftermath\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>News at StarWars.com<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Featuring more info and thoughts from Yours Truly.)<\/p>\n<p>I am writing an official Star Wars novel.<\/p>\n<p>I am writing the first (newly) canonical novel set after\u00a0<strong>Return of the Jedi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot feel my legs, and I have been drunkenly pirouetting wildly around the house for months, making lightsaber sounds and forcing my four-year-old on a steady regimen of\u00a0<strong>Star Warsy<\/strong> goodness. I am geeking out\u00a0<em>hardcore<\/em> over here.
