{"id":25863,"date":"2015-01-16T10:46:40","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T15:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/?p=25863"},"modified":"2015-01-16T10:46:41","modified_gmt":"2015-01-16T15:46:41","slug":"flash-fiction-challenge-its-x-meets-y","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/2015\/01\/16\/flash-fiction-challenge-its-x-meets-y\/","title":{"rendered":"Flash Fiction Challenge: &#8220;It&#8217;s X Meets Y!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last week&#8217;s challenge: <a href=\"http:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/2015\/01\/09\/flash-fiction-challenge-who-the-fuck-is-my-dd-character\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who The Fuck Is My D&amp;D Character?<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I have noted in the past, I love that some writers describe their stories &#8212; usually in an elevator pitch or to sell the story to an agent, editor or reader &#8212; as &#8220;THIS STORY meets THAT STORY.&#8221; Right? &#8220;Oh,&#8221; the writer says, &#8220;It&#8217;s like CATCHER IN THE RYE meets SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS.&#8221; And you&#8217;re like, whoa, what the fuck does that even mean.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we are going to find out.<\/p>\n<p>Below, you&#8217;ll find two columns, each of 20\u00a0different fairly well-known properties.<\/p>\n<p>You will randomly choose one from each column either by d20 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.random.org\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>random number generator<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then you will literally fill in the variables of the equation:<\/p>\n<p>IT&#8217;S LIKE <strong>X<\/strong> MEETS <strong>Y<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And you will write the resultant story.<\/p>\n<p>You have &#8212; let&#8217;s go with 2000 words this time around.<\/p>\n<p>Write the story. Post on your blog or online space. Drop a link here so we can all read it. The stories will be due and ready one week from now &#8212; next Friday at noon EST.<\/p>\n<p>Note: your goal is not to literally mash these up in fan-fiction (though I suppose if that&#8217;s where your head goes, hey, I can&#8217;t stop you) &#8212; the goal is to take the\u00a0<em>idea,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0<em>spirit<\/em> of the combination and make them into a story all your own. What is the theoretical mash-up look like and feel like? Diggit? So, what&#8217;s the story like if you get: &#8220;It&#8217;s like HARRY POTTER meets INDIANA JONES?&#8221; Or, &#8220;It&#8217;s like GAME OF THRONES meets SCOOBY DOO.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Smash them together, see what original story squishes out.<\/p>\n<p>Ready?
