And you can talk about comic books, too, if you&#8217;re so inclined.<\/p>\n<p>Note: I&#8217;m not asking about your favorite scary book. I&#8217;m asking about the one that scared you, or freaked you out, or disturbed you on some fundamental level.<\/p>\n<p>I get more than a little freaked out by serial killer books. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"&quot;http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0030MQIZQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0030MQIZQ&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=ICBQLWOTBPW7NHN2\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Exquisite Corpse<\/strong><\/a><\/span> by Poppy Z. Brite is an early one that got under my skin. Recently, worth noting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003QHZ5WC\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003QHZ5WC&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=MLVHPUXZYJLA5W22\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Mister Slaughter<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, by Robert McCammon &#8212; pre-Revolutionary War serial killer tale, with tension so taut it was like a rope around my neck as I read it. Or, consider the last two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/s?kw=lauren+beukes&amp;class=\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Lauren Beukes novels<\/strong><\/span><\/a>: <strong>The Shining Girls<\/strong> and <strong>Broken Monsters<\/strong>. I&#8217;m only halfway through the latter but\u00a0<em>dang<\/em> can she a) write and b) freak you the fuck out. For\u00a0<em>non<\/em>-serial killer novels, while the film version didn&#8217;t spook me, the novel of\u00a0<strong>The Exorcist<\/strong> is a pretty amazing read, and if you&#8217;ve never read it, well, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004V5180G\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B004V5180G&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=TBP3LCEWBR3S37LC\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>now&#8217;s the time<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Your turn!<\/p>\n<p>What books have really gotten under your skin?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s not a book, exactly, but a particular\u00a0<em>scene<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s hear it.<\/p>\n<p>(We&#8217;ll do movies next week, and maybe games after.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The question I pose is a pretty simple one: What is the scariest book you&#8217;ve ever read?
