I prefer the original meme I saw going around &#8212; books that &#8220;stayed with you.&#8221; Like a haunting ghost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B005T54IAY\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B005T54IAY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=YAMB5NU7UBB32RK7\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Swan Song, Robert McCammon<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was\u00a0<strong>Boy&#8217;s Life<\/strong> that made me want to be a writer, and it&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mister Slaughter<\/strong> that disturbs me the most, but while a lot of folks love epic fantasy, I fell in love with epic horror reading <strong>Swan Song<\/strong>. Actually,\u00a0<strong>Swan Song\u00a0<\/strong>was my gateway into horror &#8212; to King, Koontz, Barker, Brite, and beyond. (Also, thanks to my wonderful sister, I have a copy of the illustrated first edition.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/031242695X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=031242695X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=FFS6FDUI3A7CKOS3\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Blackburn, Bradley Denton<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forget Dexter. Go read Blackburn. How does a boy become a serial killer? It&#8217;s grim, hilarious, sad, scary, sweet, and back to grim again. It run laps around most other books and is some truly amazing writing. Denton&#8217;s a helluva prose-master, good as Lansdale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000TWUTYG\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000TWUTYG&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=GZUFWDNDTBLNADFE\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Beloved, Toni Morrison<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beloved<\/strong> is at first blush a horror novel. The horror of slavery. The ghost (real or imagined) of a dead child. Elegant, astounding work. (I actually got to meet the author when I was in college.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00IS619X0\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00IS619X0&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=QMLEJFXDQJQGVZVE\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ulysses, James Joyce<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a book so big you could use it to kill a man. It&#8217;s long and rambling and strange. It also contains playful, powerful prose and moments of mundane bullshit elevated to mythic horseshit. It&#8217;s an astounding read. A hard slog, but worth it if you can manage.\u00a0<strong>Finnegan&#8217;s Wake<\/strong> is also a book that will stay with you, provided you don&#8217;t mind trying to read a book that may or may not just be a cuckoo idea virus scrawled madly onto paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=southern%20reach%20trilogy&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Ddigital-text&amp;linkId=CU3C6SN6X2J3S3EN\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Southern Reach Trilogy, Jeff VanderMeer<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Talked about this one <a href=\"http:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/2014\/09\/01\/the-eerie-resonance-of-the-southern-reach-trilogy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>last week<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Just shut up and go read it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0030MQIZQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0030MQIZQ&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=X5SO2VZBYTJNTADM\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Exquisite Corpse, Poppy Z. Brite<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This book is\u00a0<em>super-gross<\/em>. By which I mean &#8212; grisly, gory, sex with dead bodies. It&#8217;s also written with such beauty, and crafted with such love, that it&#8217;s an astounding achievement. A tough book. Worth every word. All of my Brite books are a gift. All her books are horror written in neon, blood, hairspray, lighter fluid, sex juice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003JFJHTS\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003JFJHTS&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=HQYXWRV5HDJON2VR\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale, Margaret Atwood<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It feels like we&#8217;re living in its prequel at times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003J4VELI\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003J4VELI&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=HXBMLPXCSELRJDNB\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets, David Simon<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If hard-ass journalism had a baby with Greek tragedy, you&#8217;d get this. This is also the book that effectively parented both the television shows\u00a0<strong>Homicide\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>The Wire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002TWIVNA\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002TWIVNA&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=UHTYM3ZXBRYFHHYO\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Things They Carried, Tim O&#8217;Brien<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spare, tough like jerky, and a very personal look at Viet Nam and its soldiers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001E70RVK\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B001E70RVK&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=terriblemin0b-20&amp;linkId=N32EJ7KA233VW6VA\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pandemonium, Daryl Gregory<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is it even fair to call this a demonic possession book? I dunno. Whatever. It&#8217;s amazing. I remember reading this while on a plane (to Hawaii, I think), and it vacuumed this into my eyeballs and it buried its head under my skin like a tick.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runners-up<\/strong>: Shining Girls (Lauren Beukes), Twelve-Fingered Boy (John Hornor Jacobs &#8212; actually, anything by JHJ), All the Rage (Courtney Summers), Heart-Shaped Box (Joe Hill), Dark Tower (Stephen King), Raven (Charles Grant), Sorrow Floats (Tim Sandlin), A Dirty Job (Christopher Moore), The Adventurist (Robert Young Pelton), Pecked to Death by Ducks (Tim Cahill), anything by Joe Lansdale, and probably a whole lot more I&#8217;m not remembering because dang, man, I gotta go to bed.<\/p>\n<h2>Your Turn<\/h2>\n<p>Give me 5 &#8211; 10 books that stayed with you.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about why, if you can.<\/p>\n<p>Go.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook memes are usually the intellectual equivalent of getting gum stuck in your pubic hair, but any meme that&#8217;s about books is probably one that&#8217;s okay by me.
