{"id":21943,"date":"2014-01-15T10:00:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T15:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/?p=21943"},"modified":"2014-01-15T09:53:55","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T14:53:55","slug":"hello-protagonist-labs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/terribleminds.com\/ramble\/2014\/01\/15\/hello-protagonist-labs\/","title":{"rendered":"Hello, Protagonist Labs &#8212; And Other News!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/storium.com\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.squarespace.com\/static\/507b0ff084ae362b5e79a4a7\/t\/524e6d7de4b093015db73c42\/1380871549781\/ProtagLabs_Storium.png?resize=432%2C308\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve been talking to this fine upstanding deviant by the name of &#8220;Stephen Hood&#8221; (sounds like a criminal&#8217;s name to me) for some time about a little product that way back when didn&#8217;t even have a name, but has since evolved to become <a title=\"http:\/\/storium.com\" href=\"http:\/\/storium.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Storium<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, an online storytelling engine &#8212; a cross between playing a tabletop roleplaying game and controlling a novel from within its pages.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen Storium go from something totally theoretical to a thing that&#8217;s now in an alpha state.<\/p>\n<p>A thing you can actually\u00a0<em>use<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;ve seen the company behind Storium &#8212; Protagonist Labs &#8212; hire on a series of fascinating advisors. Talented creative folks I call friends, like Mur Lafferty, Will Hindmarch, J.C. Hutchins.<\/p>\n<p>And I thought, &#8220;Well, somebody needs to get in there and lower the level of discourse. You really can\u2019t ask for a more entertaining and affecting work of supernatural fiction\u2026or any type of fiction, for that matter.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"http:\/\/ferghova.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/14\/mockingbird-by-chuck-wendig\/\" href=\"http:\/\/ferghova.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/14\/mockingbird-by-chuck-wendig\/\"><strong>Sean Ferguson reviews the second Miriam book, MOCKINGBIRD<\/strong><\/a><\/span>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If this book series isn\u2019t even on your radar yet, I implore you to make swift changes to make it so. These books have a little bit of everything: action and horror, love and suspense, sex and mayhem. Moments of unadulterated horror are punctuated with tongue-in-cheek comedy, as Wendig\u2019s foul-mouthed Miriam wanders the highways and byways of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus, some folks have been finding <strong>BLACKBIRDS<\/strong>, still, which is exciting!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/serialdistractions.com\/2014\/01\/10\/double-shot-of-chuck-wendig-double-dead-and-blackbirds\/\" href=\"http:\/\/serialdistractions.com\/2014\/01\/10\/double-shot-of-chuck-wendig-double-dead-and-blackbirds\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>From Serial Distractions<\/strong><\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Here Wendig really flexes his writing muscles. In Miriam, he\u2019s created a wonderfully flawed, but redeemable, character. The pacing, as usual, is relentless and the dialogue crisp and natural. Further, Wendig plays with a lot of serious issues here\u2013death, redemption, fate\u2013and does so in an entertaining, but no less thoughtful, way. It\u2019s a road-trip novel that\u2019s several layers deep, succeeding in being literary without sacrificing its pulp roots. It\u2019s simply a great read.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/melissa-melsworld.blogspot.com\/2014\/01\/book-review-blackbirds.html\" href=\"http:\/\/melissa-melsworld.blogspot.com\/2014\/01\/book-review-blackbirds.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Skyla Dawn re-reviews the book, too<\/strong><\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Wendig has written a better rounded, more realistic heroine than a number of female writers I can think of; the man knows what he\u2019s doing and\u00a0<em>he gets his character<\/em>. Miriam is abrasive and damaged and cut with sharp edges, but you can be damn sure I know a fuck-ton of women who are just like that. Some of them say &#8216;fuck-ton.'&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see.
