Blu-Ray Is Not A Superhero, Or A Sad Dude Named “Ray”
  • Quick one this morning:

So. Say we got a Blu-Ray player free with our television.

Say I wanted to buy a Blu-Ray film.

Y’know, something that is equally “awesome movie” and “great-looking” on the tube.

    What would you buy?

    Meaning, what should I buy?

    Ponder.

    Answer.

    Help a brutha out?

You know, I’ve had my PS3 for about a year and haven’t gotten a single Blu-Ray yet. Rory says we’re holding out for when the extended cut LotR box set comes out this holiday. I guess it’s going to look super awesome or something. I don’t know, I still don’t see much difference between hi-def and standard.

But I’ll be watching for some good recs.

  • Ok, apparently LotR super long extended take a week to watch it all cut is coming out Holiday 2011. Jeebus.

  • First thing you should always buy, regardless of format: The Outsiders.

After that, both Iron Man and Avatar look great on BluRay.

  • The Fifth Element looks great on blu-ray and it’s a damn fine film. If you want something that was filmed for high-def, try The Dark Knight. Not the most vibrant color palette, but the cinematography and sound are spectacular.

Also, I just rewatched Speed Racer on blu-ray. In. Cred. Ib. Le. If you hated that movie on its own merits, or are prone to seizures, disregard this recommendation. Otherwise, it’s a must-buy.

  • @Daniel: Y’know, I’ve never seen SPEED RACER. But it does call to mind one movie I want, not just because it’s haaaaawt as Hell — BOUND. Wow. Great noir.

@Rick: Oooh. IRON MAN is a good choice. AVATAR would probably look lovely, but I don’t know that I liked the movie enough to own it.

@Kate: So far, I haven’t actually seen much difference — but, was pondering that maybe “the right movie” would look killer on Blu-Ray.

  • THE MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY boxed set would be worth it.

We have a PS3, but haven’t picked up any BluRay, mostly because our TV isn’t big enough to make any real difference.

  • Gareth:

    Damn. Nailed it.

That’s a good call, right there.

  • For those who own a PS3, try Watchmen – The Complete Experience: two games (which should’ve been one from the start, but still) and the movie blu-ray for the price of a single game or blu-ray.

The games aren’t fantastic (and probably worth of being purchased separately), but they’re a fun, 3D-modeled throwback to old arcade beat’em ups like Double Dragon and Final Fight. Except that, man, you play as Rorschach or Nite Owl, and not some faceless gang member.

The movie obviously looks great on high definition, considering the action scenes and the diverse locations depicted (New York, North Pole, Mars!). There’s a special feature where you can watch the whole movie “alongside” the director; IIRC, in this mode you can switch camera angles etc. during commentaries so to better understand what’s being pointed out.

If you liked Watchmen, Chuck, it’s probably a good choice of a single blu-ray anyway. It’s just that the PS3 game + movie package is so sweet a deal…

  • I refuse to buy a DVD or Blu-Ray of AVATAR until a Director’s Cut or Extended Cut comes out. Half the reason I buy movies is for the special features, -especially- ones with such extensive special effects and CG as AVATAR.

  • If you don’t buy yourself Planet Earth in blu-ray, you might as well throat-punch a nun, Chuck. That right there is the very essence of Blu-Ray. I have a ridiculously huge tv (72 inch) and a blu-ray and that is why, right there. Avatar – while a mediocre film – is STUNNING in HD/blu-ray. T2, one of my all-time favorite movies, is also stellar.

Any digitally rendered animated movie looks outstanding, and we love UP in particular. Band of Brothers is another one that I think looks great – super gritty and detailed, just like a war movie should look.

  • I wouldn’t buy any movie on Blu-Ray that wasn’t originally produced HD. They can upscale and redigitize the old classics, but the Blu-Ray player will do that anyway. We pop in our old DVDs and they look great.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe the Blu-Ray editions of older movies are fantabulous and standards above the DVD upscaling.

Currently I’ve only got two Blu-Ray movies. Avatar, because damn that’s a beautiful movie. And my wife saw Zombieland on sale and picked it up.

With the cost, it’s got to be something really the shit to get me to buy Blu-Ray.
