Man Seeking Sweet Blog Meats (Discreet Treats For Me To Eat And Excrete)

  • Grass Fed

Starting on — *checks calendar* — Saturday you’re going to start seeing some paroxysmic blog-gasms from writers other than I, as I will be upgrading Der Wendighaus to its 2.0 status (which necessitates a move about, mmm, 10 minutes West of here). In the meantime, I was wondering: care to do me a favor?

Now and again I pop up my head like a whistle-pig at his hole and I realize, oh shit, I think I’ve run out of blog topics. I find myself covered in flopsweat. Panic oozes from every orifice. I feel like a kid in class who forgot there was a test. I feel naked. Empty. I pee myself. I fall down stairs.

    It isn’t good.

It’s also not true, really — I haven’t run out of topics, exactly. I’m sure I could make something up.

It would just probably suck, is all.

So once more I turn to you.

    Throw me some blog topics.

Whatever you want me to talk about, throw it at my head, I’ll see what I can’t do. I can’t promise anything, of course — you say, “Chuck! Chuck. Chuck. You need to blog about the economic revival of Liberia! And the breeding habits of the common beet! And I’d like you to assuage my fear of dolphins — in particular, the fear of being raped by dolphins at the public pool.” And I’m left just sort of shrugging?

But, as said, I’ll do my best.

Any topic. Doesn’t have to be writing-related, but I can obviously cover stuff like that.

    Throw it at me.

Toss some meat into the cage.

    See if I eat it.

And thanks, in advance, for helping me refill my blog tanks.

I hate hearing these words from a spouse….”we need to talk” and then have to wait hours for ..”the talk”…just spill it!!! why does it always have to be dramatic! sorry..just venting….

  • We know you kill your darlings, especially in the revision process. It’s something good writers do, right?

I want to know what other atrocities you commit on your own work as you put it through the fine metal mesh of editing to create the tasty burger of the final product.

What puppies do you kick? Which baby seals get punched first? Is it an arduous task for you, a gleeful and sadistic joy, or a bit of both?

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, talk to us about upcoming movies. Especially those based on stuff that’s been around for a while. Thor. Captain America. Green Lantern. Green Hornet. Cowboys & Aliens. Tron.

Or you could talk more about Inception. That’s always a good time. I really want to see that movie again. Mmm. Sweet, sweet storytelling.

  • I would like you to discuss beard grooming procedures, as extensively as you can.

Research, you know. One day I might need to write about a man with a beard! Indeed, it would be shameful if I did not!

  • Fanbois vs. The Non-conformists.

    Go. Go. Go.

  • Why not go over the different types of writing? How is writing a novel different from writing an RPG or RPG supplement? Differences in getting each work published or finding the work at all, that sort of thing. Maybe throw in additional comparison to your screen writing and how that works.

Basically the different worlds of writing and your experiences within them.

  • Excellent.

    This is all good stuff.

The fanboy thing is definitely good blog fodder.

And it’s funny, I don’t blog much about screenwriting. I really should.

    Thanks, peeps.

  • I would love to know how you feel about “altered books”. Basically it is a craft where you take a book and alter it, changing the meaning via stamps, watercolors, decoupage, cutting, etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altered_book

I am entraced by the idea but the librarian in me will not let me do it. Someties I think they are beautiful, sometimes I think they are offensive.

As an author, how would you feel if someone did this to one of your books? Would you be offended or flattered that they chose your book as a springboard for their own expression?

  • Oh, weird. Never seen that. Awesome. Nice one!

  • Greetings!

Ah, yes the Fan Boy thing is a must. That is a deep, rich (need I say ripe) furrow to be sure!

How about taking a peek at some of the other way arenas writers can approach? Screenwriting is great, but what about RPGs? Tech writing? Hallmark greetings cards? And worst comes to worst, you can always lampoon them if you can’t find something nice to say about them (…at least that’s what I remember my mother saying I should do… That time is such a blur what with all the flashing wooden spoons.)

Oh! A Sienfield blog. A blog about absolutely nothing.

CCG vs RPG vs LARP. It would be like the classic Pirates vs. Ninja vs Ballerina arguments only with greater chances for paper-cuts & public ridicule.

Also, Random word blogs: Find three words at random and then weave a blog around them. (Here’s your first one: Fishbowl, Transubstantiation, Narcolepsy.) GO!

If I think of more tid-bits, I’ll toss them through the bars.

  • More food stuff, actually. You frequently make reference to food and cooking and being all local-y McLocal person, but I want to hear more about what you guys are actually eating, and how you make it that way.

What can I say, I loves me some food and some cooking.

Also, as a screenwriting student, I would like to throw my support behind more screenwriting stuff. Very relevant to my chosen career path.

  • Loved the speakeasy post (am making plans to go there soon).
I second the food topics! Yes, yes, yes!

Particularly the cooking with fire kind!
[tosses sizzling skewered bits into the cage]

  • Personally, I love your food writing. Would love to see you write more about restaurants, your cooking, and different ingredients. So you ask for meat, I say why not write about meat. ]

Although, please write about vegetables too, I am a vegetarian after all.

  • More food stuff. Sweet, I can do that.

  • (Test!)

  • For some reason, the site wouldn’t accept Jennifer Bridges’ entry, so, I post it here…

“Here are some ideas that I’d love for you to blog about!

    Random:

Chuck Wendig vs. Chuck Norris – the Epic Beard guys face off!!! Somebody call the amberlamps!

    Gaming:

The next generation of gamers who are moving farther and farther away from table-top RPG’s – is it a good thing? Do you think table-top RPG’s will remain as we go into the next 40 years of gaming? Is the transition to video games and other visual stimuli a natural progression and if so, where do you feel the future of the industry is going for you as a writer?

Hehe I really liked Deehota’s idea for “CCG vs RPG vs LARP” as well!

Women in Gaming – have you noticed a significant difference in the industry as more and more women are not only participating, but also helping to create games? Do you feel the change has been for better or for worse? (As a woman asking this, I’m not intending to “have a charged reason to fight” with the answer by any means, I’m genuinely curious!) Some gamers I’ve met have told me they wished their girlfriends/wives/etc. would stay out of it because it’s their “guy” time with their friends and others embrace it wholeheartedly.

    Technology:

What do you think about these new-fangled blogs and social networking sites? Have you found an increase in revenue since you started blogging and participating in things like Facebook & Twitter? Now that ‘everyone has an opinion’ with these things, has it helped you as a writer or even as a person or just simply made you want to punch more baby seals? Do you think it’s a good idea for newbies to the industry to get involved with social networking to make well…networking contacts or should they just stay back and stop making fools of themselves – thus the fan boi syndrome where they don’t know when is enough?

    Life Balance:

How do YOU as a writer balance your …unique personality when it comes to prospective jobs? Obviously some of the stuff on your blogs and social networking sites has some flavorful language – the kind that any HR department would instantly disapprove of, lol. And yet, you’re still getting work (well duh, you’re an awesome writer). What do you do to “tame the beast” so to speak, or do you simply flip ‘em the bird and say, “HIRE ME NOW, BITCHES!” Is this strong personality something you’ve had to work for and have you ever been passed over for work because of it? I ask because as I’ve been reading tons and tons of books on etiquette, obviously a lot of things on here are total No-No’s, but I find them inspiring that you can be whoever the hell you want to be and not for a second have to pretend that you’re somebody that you’re not. That makes you unique and that makes people sit up and take notice! But certainly there’s a balance of some sort, isn’t there?

    Writing:

When you first got into the industry – how did you approach people about getting your work published? Did you just send in manuscript after manuscript until you got an in – or did you bust down people’s doors and crash land at parties butt-naked to get some attention? Or perhaps, something else entirely? Do you think things have changed since then in that regard? If you were younger and trying to break in now, do you think those same things would work?

Okay that’s it I can’t take it anymore! I need me some prime rib…and BACON!!!!

    -Jen”

  • Gah. I definitely need some screenwriting savvy.

More macro photography stuff – how to, that is. Not that I don’t immediately hop on the photos anyway.

The failed recipe that stole your soul…

  • I’ll second @DeAnna: a post on photography would be very cool!

  • Well, I came here, hoping to say a thing or two, but Jen said all of them just before I could! :O
Especially the Chuck (Wendig) VS Chuck (Norris) fight…
Woah, it would be EPIC. ;)

Just to say that I never thought you’d get such quality entries. Good luck!

  • Talk about the move, and the difference between the (soon to be) old batcave (a.k.a. beardly writer works here!) and the (soon to be) new batcave. What’s great about them? What did/do you not like? What are musts to have in there, and what are the don’ts? Is a fountain of whiskey a boon or a bane? String quartets? Muskrat groomers? Bare, monk-like cell?

  • Really looking forward to your future blogs, all of the ideas here sound great!
