Twelve. The answer is twelve.

Or, according to Ben Franklin: three, if two of them are dead.

So okay, looking at things. Here's what I was thinking.

Plain A: A Google group with discussions and files posted for members to download and review. "Hey all, I have this short I'm trying to work on. I want to get it out the door by Thursday the 23th." Or "Hey, I read this thing about blue berries as a writing medium, what do you think?" You can get messages in email, or just by going to the site so you don't have to look at stuff if you don't want to.

Plan B: Similar idea, but I'd set up a password protected forum. Similar set up. A writer posts a thread with something they want to have reviewed stuck in. People drop in, comment, general discussion. Things like that. Not all that dissimilar but less email capacity.

What do you think?

As a sidenote, I'm not really concerned about making money. Yet. Self-publishing is, for me, the means to an end, not the end (which perhaps shows my slight bias against it, still) -- differently put, self-publishing is part of a long con, where I convince people of the Great Lie that I happen to be a writer worth reading.

Mostly, I want to establish an audience.

And then, *then* we get around to money. :)

You should totally start, like, a writer's guild! And we could team4mish and shit! We would do big raids and marry enemy women and stuff.

... shit, maybe I forget what writers do.

But, seriously, a group of semi-like minded creative types peer-reviewing and self-publishing is the type of thing that eventually gets "Incorporated" put behind its name. S'good idea.

And MY axe!

Will Hindmarch: What she said!

Chuck: There are a number of alternative methods for release that can net you at least a little money, if free work is the concern. Hell, ads on the internet alone can make a pretty penny with a well-marketed book.

You're probably not going to find the "best way forward." You'll probably find a good way though, or at least a feasible and workable way. If you found the best way, you'd be rich. We all know how frequently that happens, particularly in publishing.
